Maple's day started like any other, she tended to the trees and flowers in her little grove making sure all of them were healthy and strong, giving them water and weeding. She could hear the chirping of the summer cicada's echoing around, only adding to the calm atmosphere. Today was cleaning day, which meant any cloth she had in her burrow was going to get washed until it was pretty and bright. This also meant she would be away from her grove for a while, which worried her. She had heard rumors that human loggers had been spotted in the area and her trees were big and healthy, perfect targets for the loggers.

She shook her head to clear her mind. She hadn't seen any sign of loggers in her area, so there wasn't anything for her to worry about. She smiled with a nod, as she calmed herself down and gathered everything from her burrow that would need to be cleaned. There wasn't much to take, since she didn't use cloth for too much, it did make a good blanket during the winter months and with winter on the way she had to be ready. She carried her basket of cloth away from her home and to the spring about a half a mile away. It was quite the trek for her little paws, but it was a good opportunity for her to locate potential food sources like berry bushes and other nut trees.

About an hour into her cleaning she began to feel off. A sense of dread crawling up her spine. She lifted her head and looked around only to notice just how quiet the area was, no animal noises, even the cicada had become silent. Suddenly she heard a cry, though it wasn't that she heard it, more that she felt it deep within her. a cry for help....a cry of pain....With a gasp she dropped her things and bolted as fast as her tiny paws could go. Her trees were in trouble! She didn't know exactly how she knew, but she knew. The closer she got to her grove, the louder the cries got and the ore she could hear the sounds of human machines.

"Stop!!!" she cried as she burst from the bushes and threw her small body between her trees and the loggers with their saws. "You're hurting them!! Can't you hear them crying!!" she cried tears gathering in her eyes from her anger, frustration and fear. The loggers laughed as they lifted their saws, aiming them at the small burroot intent on their task. "I won't let you hurt them!"
