I liked the desaturated colours. Makes the scene feel more conventional, while still being sci-fi.

Thanks! I usually tend to give a monochromatic tone to final render if feasible. Also, defocus + mist effect will mostly did wonder to solve BG problem (i.e. "I don't know what to put in the BG!").
