Um... I'm not sure about the background on this pic.It looks pretty retarded..... Sooooo NO COMMENTS ON IT.
I was going for something but it sure sucked.
It's supposed to be that he's kinda in a very shallow pool of water and little rivulets of it are leaking back into the main ocean but yeh. Looks like he's growing tentacles or something...

OAnnnywwwwaaaayyyy.... Chip ends up conking his head on a rock during a storm and washes up on shore. He's later collected by the king (Melany's father) and put on display as an oddity. The dude loves rare or strange creatures.
I might end up making some stupid background if people make a bunch of dumb comments about it or I get sick of looking at it XoP Just lazy right now.

i'm normally not big on merfolk possessing the inexplainable knee-joint in their tail, but Chip is Chip and therefore this image is awesome and i shall fave it.

I like the general effect of the water but it's too... vague or ... not right XoP
Chip is actually a descendant of a whole kingdom of people who turned themselves into Merfolk to avoid war. He's royalty, only the royals have colored tips on their fins and ears and gills lol
That's also why he doesn't have the boring cliche fishy half, but is all flesh toned except his tips and fin webbing ^^ Since they're magically modified humans they technically have two leg bones still, they're just fused (they have butts still *snort*). I dunno what happened to their feet, maybe the bones fill out each of the fin spikes. That's also why he has a tail fin like a mammal but fins and gills like fish ^^
Their lungs are modified a lot, they don't actually breath out of their mouths or nose, but the two sets of gills. They can breathe out of water, but the gills have to be wet or they get stuck together. They can breathe out of one set if need be, but they prefer to have both clear, naturally. That somehow frees up their mouths for talking underwater, but probably a lot due to magic since human voices don't travel well in water hahah
They don't kiss either. They touch each other's gills. That's like super intimate to them lol
Since merfolk don't actually exist in their world, they still consider themselves humans, but since they obviously aren't "normal" humans they just call themselves the Mer. Kinda as a joke and also to refer themselves differently from the landbound humans, as they call 'em!

not way too much. it's quite interesting to a high-fantasy fanboy like myself. i find it all fascinating. i'm curious as to how their tails move with those legbones in them.

And they swim pretty much like any sea mammal, they just still have a true knee. I dunno if sea mammals really have knees or not.. LOL I think not.
Their fins are able to be pulled in flush with their bodies, though normally in the water they don't really need to tuck them in. Although I guess it's useful like if they encounter rough water or are horsing around lol

well. seals have feet on the end of their tails, so i'm not sure how that works. and whales long ago lost all but the most vestigial of leg bones. but in any case so they swim like a... dolphin? is that close?
