So this tale is known in Russia!? Thanks for your kind words

You wouldn't believe how widely known it is here. 2 or 3 cartoons were made about 20 or so years ago (and great cartoons, I say!), in some kind of musical style.
And, by the way, they added a guy, who travels around with animals, and a princess, who loves him.

Though not many know that there weren't any princesses in the original tale.

I don't know if those cartoons were translated, but they're really worth seeing! There's a musical after cartoons going nowadays in the main Moscow cinema.

An old donkey hears that the farmer is going to kill him for his skin. He runs away to sing in the city. On his way, he meets an old hound who can no longer hunt, an old cat who can no longer catch rats, and an annoyingly loud rooster.

On their way, they run across a bandit hideout, decide to sing for their dinner, and inadvertently scare off the bandits. So they settle in there for the night. One bandit comes back to investigate...and the animals panic and run him off. The bandits abandon the house, thinking that it's haunted; the animals decide to give up on their singing careers and just stay there.
