Description True Painters Wheel Beta
A custom color picker Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop.
Copyright Β© 2014-2015 by Piero Vettori
Free for personal use.

Features

RYB Primary Colors
The colors are usually represented by software with the RGB system, but painters prefer to work with the RYB system because it better represents the way our eyes actually see relations between colors.

Real Opposite Colors
There is no such thing as "opposite colors" in physics. It is just the way our eyes see colors that allows us to perceive opposites.
When you work with the RYB color wheel you can find the opposite of any color at the other side of the wheel the same way our brain conceives it.

HSB Indicator
This label shows the actual values of Hue, Brightness and Saturation.

Color Checker
This square shows the last selected color.
It also shows the color you are selecting when dragging over the wheel or triangle so you can see by contrast the difference between your current color and the previous one.

Snap-on Inner Wheel
It may be useful to select the exact primary and secondary colors without having to search them on the continuous color wheel.
The sectors inner wheel also work as snap-on selectors while dragging the mouse over them.

Install
Click the download button to the right (or just click here ).
Extract the content of this archive and put it in your Photoshop application Plug-ins folder.
This usually is: %PROGRAMFILES%/Adobe/Photoshop /Plug-ins/Panels/
After copying the source files into the Plug-ins folder open Photoshop and open the Window menu.
Locate the Extensions submenu and you should see a new item named "TruePaintersWheel".
Just click the menu item and a new panel or icon should show up in the Photoshop window.

Version info
This plugin is currently in development and it has been tested only with Photoshop CS6 on a Windows 7 machine.
It should work on both PC and MAC and with other versions of Photoshop.
20150104: The actual spread of the hues may seem uneven. I'm still looking for the best way to show them.
20150105: It seems not to be compatible with Photoshop CC. Looking for a workaround.
20150529: Not compatible with Photoshop CC (and perhaps CS6 Extended Portable) because flash plugins are no more supported.
20160717: A new version rewritten for Photoshop CC will be released in the near future. Please be patient!

If you try it with another system and/or version of Photoshop please let me know if it works.

That is a tough question.
I wish I could tell you a release date, but the truth is that there is some legal stuff that I need to address before publishing and I'm not sure when I'll be able to do that.

I never had the chance to test the old version on a Mac.
It may work, but no guarantees.
The new version for Photoshop CC (not released yet) definitely works on both Windows and Mac.

Hi, I tired installing it in Photoshop CS5 on my Mac and it didn't work. I wasn't sure if I had to copy the whole folder or was I suppose to copy the jsx file.

EDIT: I just reread the description and it doesn't say it works for CS5. Sorry...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PVproject In reply to Toxic-Ramen [2017-07-03 06:57:04 +0000 UTC]

It may work on CS5, but I never had it tested on a Mac.
Be sure to extract ALL the .zip content (folder included) inside your /Plugins/Panels folder, not just one file or the single files.

Toxic-Ramen In reply to PVproject [2017-07-05 03:11:08 +0000 UTC]

I tried it and the extensions option in Photoshop was greyed out. I wasn't sure if it was because Adobe doesn't support the extensions anymore or if was because I was using CS5 on a new Mac with macOS Sierra, the latest operating system.

Hello, first of all, thank you for making the painter's wheel, but I can't se to install in my cs6, I was wondering if this has to do with windows 10

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PVproject In reply to daifuno [2017-02-04 11:15:43 +0000 UTC]

It should work on Windows 10.
There's a couple things you can check:
- check if you have CS5 installed in both Programs and Programs(x86) folder and in the case copy the plugin folder inside both;
- try activating the debug mode (download this file-> PhotoshopDebugMode , extract and double click the .reg file inside).

I've been using True Painters Wheel for a while and I was wondering if it's possible to resize the interface to be a little smaller.

I would also like the option to make it better for left handed people by having the selected colors in the upper left.

HSV sliders under the color wheel would also be helpful if you're looking for something extra to add to it. Otherwise it works flawlessly!

PVproject In reply to iHax [2016-12-01 16:11:42 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for your feedback!
Resizing the interface may result in a wheel too small for proper color picking, but I will definitely take into account your suggestions.

How is it different from MagicPicker (anastasiy.com/colorwheel ) which has all these features and in addition rectangular picker and RYB/RGB colors and different color wheels and works in CC? Does it show HSV values?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PVproject In reply to madmansadman [2016-10-29 16:58:09 +0000 UTC]

This is not intended to be a competitor.
However, the newer CC version I am currently testing has these features:
it works in CC2014, CC2015 and CC2015.5;
it has support for light and dark themes;
it has a snap-on inner picker (which may have more options in the future);
it has the option to choose between RYB/RGB mode;
it has the option to choose between tiangular/rectangular picker;
it has the option to choose between showing RGB/HSB values;
it has a copy/paste textbox with hexadecimal color value (very useful for web designers);
it has a section showing the color selection history (which MagicPicker doesn't have afaik);
it has a section for palettes management (which MagicPicker doesn't have afaik).

You may see it in action here:

madmansadman In reply to PVproject [2016-10-30 02:22:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! looks good. probably you need a rectangular mode where more colors are available, triangle is limited. Also HSV should be added.Β But I'll stick with MagicPicker which has all these and a lot of color controls, hex,HSV,YUV,CMYK mode, print/web design tools and different useful keyboard shortcuts.
but good luck!

(MixColors their other plugin has color selection history by the way. also the new color panel inPhotoshop CC has history)
