Description
It was a late afternoon. You and your friend were out wandering in the desert climate, hopelessly lost. Your caravan was attacked by a number of creatures, and you two managed to escape by running and hiding behind a large boulder. When the creatures left, you searched the remains of the caravan hoping to find a map. With only a few small fragments remaining of the weathered navigation tool, you both decide to just start walking. You were lucky enough to have water, and with the sun setting, the desert was not too hot. Your friend often expressed his concern about the setting sun: it was going to be very cold that night, and with no fire for heat or protection, he became increasingly worried they wouldn't survive to see the morning light. He reminded you about his studies of the desert and all of its dangers. He rambled on about the massive snakes, the dragons, and the monstrous sand worm that could easily eat a human. He continued with how difficult it was to secure water or food. He tried to calm himself by explaining the various techniques and materials needed to build simple things like spears or tents. You wished he would stop talking, but the continuous drone of his voice was somewhat calming to listen to. It gave you a sense of sanity listening to his crazy speech. After all, if he wasn't here, all you would have is your own thoughts to torture you.
The light of the safe sun continued to fade, and after a considerable amount of discussion between you two, the decision was made to stop and camp. There was not a lot of materials out here to build a tent; there was hardly enough for a small fire. The wimpy pile of twigs could probably only create a candle sized flame; that is, if it would light. You and your friend lay hunched over the small pile rubbing dried sticks together. Both of you moved and twisted the sticks in various ways to try and make a flame. Neither of you knew what you were doing, but just making the attempt made you feel better. Your friend's mouth continued to play it one note, book long song of survival tips. He was saying something about sleeping close together like a married couple to keep warm. You were against that thought, but as he kept talking and the temperature kept dropping, warmth was something you desired, and you were going to get it somehow.
The night came in, and the fire was never lit. You and your friend huddle close in the sand and dirt. On any other occasion, this would have been an awkward and unwanted experience, but the bitter air pushed your morals aside. Your sleep was spotty: you found yourself awake one moment and dreaming the next. None of your dreams were happy, and they only lasted for a few minutes before you opened your eyes again. You couldn't tell if your friend was having the same horrible time sleeping, it was simply too dark to tell.
Morning slowly came, and the sand turned from a night blue to a fiery orange and yellow. You managed to see some of the sunrise before drifting back to sleep. You became a little more comfortable with the new warmth coming from the sky.
You were still a bit drowsy when you awoke again. In your state of comfort, you had rolled away from your friend's body. Fearing he may still be cold, you somewhat reluctantly rolled back over, searching for him with half closed eyes. Your hand lazily searched for him, but you only found sand. You lifted your head and slowly opened your eyes: there was only a slight depression where he used to lay. You looked some more, but didn't find any foot prints. You rolled over continuing your search. You saw something, and your eyes shot open in terror.
In front of you was a massive foot. The large, gold, and clawed dragon's foot was just feet from you and slightly dug into the sand. The foot itself had to be as tall as you. You didn't want to, but you followed the foot up to a large leg. From the leg it went to the white and gold underbelly. The belly lead to a massive and muscular torso with two thick arms. And above the torso was a head covered in horns. The dragon stood on its hind legs, showing off its amazing size. It had to be taller than most houses you've seen. A scream grabbed your attention. You look around and find your friend hanging in the dragon's large hand. He kicked and hit the dragon's hand, but it did nothing to the creature. The creature remained staring at both you and your friend, almost as if it was deciding what to do. It gave a quick expression, like it had just solved a mental puzzle, and turned its focus to the human in its claws. A long tongue exited its mouth and licked its lips. Your friend stopped kicking, frozen by fear when it realized the dragon's intentions.
The golden, god-like dragon opened its massive maw, revealing rows of white and glistening teeth. You friend was too terrified to do anything, not even scream, as the maw approached him. With a bite, your friend was fully engulfed in the mouth. The dragon gnawed on him; opening and closing the jaws on him in a somewhat rhythmical pattern. He was tossed around the mouth by the tongue, almost violently at times. Then the large tongue wrapped itself beneath his feet and pulled him in. The jaws closed, and you lost sight of him. The throat swelled as a considerable lump slowly traveled under the skin and muscle. The bulge disappeared as it reached the chest, only to reappear right below it. The belly of the creature moved a bit. The size difference was barely noticeable, but it was obvious the single human wasn't enough to quell the dragon's hunger.
The dragon returned to all fours, his torso leveling out just above yours. The head came back toward your feet. The head moved up your body as its outstretched tongue licked your entire self. The eyes met yours, giving you the same look as it did your friend. Too terrified to handle the situation, you black out. A chuckling roar filled your ears as everything went to nothing.
To be continued?...
And don't worry about you or your friend. If you recognized the dragon type, you'd know you both will be okay.
