You gotta remember to take gravity into account. As the sniper's entire body is launched backward, he must also show signs of his eventual collision with the ground beneath him. It looks as if the gun was powerful enough to rocket him him back without any signs of gravity taking its immediate effect, but if that were the case, he'd fly back far faster.
