Hey what if the Weapon is eternally cleaned and maintained by Nanites? They could dispose of the waste and repair any of the wear and tear.

From a Soldiers standpoint, waaaaaaaay to complicated. But the cool factor remains.

That said, I tried to post the following to your youtube video but it was being stupid and wouldn't let me so:

"That is so far beyond user level disassembly. As a soldier, I would be allowed to: Remove the Bi-Pod, remove the grenade launcher (for cleaning), remove the gun barrel, disassemble the reciever (without removing springs, because they fly away when tension is released) take the scope off, take the laser pointer off, remove the magazine (for reloading, duh), and maybe take off the dust plates. Most of the other disassembly would be for armorers or depot level."

That is a ton of extra work for the unit armorer. As for the barrel length thing, it's easy really, you just have a separate barrel that is issued to your designated marksman/sniper. It looks as though this weapon would have a quick change barrel, so why not. That makes it easy.

The Magazine's are WAY too big to be practical. A soldier could carry three, plus the one in the gun, and they'd have no room for other stuff, not to mention that it makes the gun bulky (and thus easier for some shmuck with a good ol' fashioned AK-47 to hit) and unwieldly in CQB. Additionally (and regarding CQB of the closest kind), you forgot one major component of all military rifles... the Beyonet Lug. Gotta have the beyonet lug!

This may seem like alot of negativity, but believe me it's just me trying to help you understand things from a military stand point so you can make your stuff better. Soldiers are individually smart, and collectively dumb. You have to keep a weapon system simple enough that they can understand it in the heat of combat, maintain it during breaks in the fighting, and still have it look impressive for parades and formation. While I am certain that this thing would go boom in an epic way, and probably blow the crap out of the bad guy, in a practical sense, it would be a tough sell...

Then again, in the future, and in Science Fiction, this thing kicks ass!

this is an awesome critique, thank you! All while I as making this thinking how it would work most of these did not cross my mind. In my sterile dirt free 3ds max viewport sometimes i forget that there are other environmental factors when guns are made. This is the most insightful comment I've gotten and will really pay attention to these things next time I make a gun, thank you!

No problem man! There was more I wanted to say, but it started to sound like I was ragging on you, which I am most assuredly not! If you ever have questions about practicality, feel free to ask.

A couple of applications where your gun WOULD excell (though need minor modification):

a) HMG role (with a longer and heavier barrel for prolonged firing). The advantage of having a semi-direct fire support weapon (the grenade Launcher) is HUGE! The disadvantage of bulk is minimized by having armor plate shielding on either side, and the wieght is negated by having a fixed mount (not light weight bi-pods). The only change would be a modified magazine that allowed for a full on belt (for sustained fire in excess of 400 rounds non-stop or 200 rounds a minute bursting indefinitely).

b) Related to the HMG role, but with out the need for a longer barrel would be in a turret on a vehicle (like we do with machineguns now). Currently when we (the US Army) put a grenade launcher (MK-19) in a vehicle mount, we also put a back up gun in the turret (normally a M-249 SAW) in case things get too close for grenades. Your gun eliminates the need for said back up gun. Indeed in most cases in Iraq and Afghanistan the Grenade Launchers were seldom used because of colateral damage potential.

I've been thinking about modelign more guns laetly. Once i get some up i'll send them your way! My current guy's ammo cylinders were meant to be stacked on the side of his mech so weight wasn't an issue. Off the mech though he might as well have been good as dead. [link] that's where he would have been holding it. but that project got scrapped.
anyway i'll send you some progress shots once i've made something new!

Awesome job man. My art is mainly pencils, and not very good (at least not conpared to the stuff here). I will gladly make myself available for advice. In the end though, remember it's art, and it's YOUR art.

it's amizing man, i loved the other one with GL, anyway i'd say the barrel is too short for a sniper rifle, it wouldn't be really precise, looks excellent as a sub machine gun or sth though

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pynion In reply to omarV [2010-05-19 01:27:20 +0000 UTC]

thanks! well at first the barrel extended and collapsed in some sci fi mannor to make it really long, but i figured it was complicated enough. You can see it here- [link]

omarV In reply to Pynion [2010-05-19 20:34:09 +0000 UTC]

yeah i liked that version of the barrel better, anyway it's both the sniper and the sort of assault rifle are astonishingly detailed and redered. keep up the good work!!

the stock looks awesome, I mean the way you integrated it into the design

the inner workings seem a bit confusing and quite complicated to me, though. it looks like as if it's gonna break easily.
