Description
Here's the story introducing Spotlight into the herd.
----
“When tomorrow comes
I'll be on my own
Feeling frightened of
The things that I don't know…”
The moon sat high in the sky and illuminated a skinny young filly as she picked her way through dense undergrowth. The forest she’d been traveling through seemed to have no end, and she was ready to give up. What did she have left to live for, anyway? The fire replayed in her mind with every step she dragged across the dirt. One minute she was sleeping peacefully beside her mother, and the next everything turned black with smoke. ‘Run,’ her mother had told her, but where was her mother now? After everything had calmed down, the filly returned to their home, but she couldn’t find her mother within the charred remains of the old barn. The filly cried so long she hurt her throat, and hadn’t been able to make a sound since. Without her voice to call with, the filly felt helpless and completely alone, so she started walking and hadn’t stopped since.
“… And though the road is long
I look up to the sky
And in the dark I found lost hope…“
She walked and walked until she finally collapsed near an old wooden fence covered in dense brush. With no energy to continue, she closed her eyes and succumbed to restless sleep.
“What is is?” the filly’s was quickly brought out of her sleep by the sound of approaching hooves.
“What does it look like dummy? It’s a foal!” a second voice hissed, and the filly opened her eyes just a crack.
“Shhh love, it’s sleeping,” A deeper third voice whispered.
They continued to talk amongst themselves and were joined by four other horses. The first voice appeared to have come from a perlino stallion. The second voice came from a dusty black mare with silver hair, and she seemed to want nothing more than to kick the perlino into the dirt. The third belonged to what the filly assumed to be the leader as his seal bay coat seemed to radiate authority.
“What do we do with it?” The filly closed her eyes as the mare came up and sniffed her, “This foal is obviously alive.”
“We could adopt her.” A soft new voice suggested. This voice reminded the filly of her mother. Warmth and love radiated from this voice’s words.
“Now Ghost, a new baby would be a huge responsibility for us.” The perlino pointed out to the motherly voice.
“Hush Nettle!” Ghost’s tone turned a bit harsh, “You have no room to talk.”
“If you two lovebirds are done, we do actually need to decide what to do with this baby.” The leader interrupted.
The filly felt a warm breathe near her head and hear Ghost’s sweet whisper, “You can open your eyes now. I know you’re awake.”
She opened her eyes, and looked up at Ghost’s big pink nose, “Uhh… Hi.”
“Hello little one,” The mare lowered her black body down to the ground and laid next to the filly, “What’s your name?”
Now all the horses’ eyes were on her as she stammered, “I’m… uhhh… Spotlight.
“Welcome to the herd,” and none protested the midnight mare’s decision.
“… I got all I need when I got you and I
I look around me, and see a sweet life
I'm stuck in the dark but you're my flashlight…”
“…You’re my flashlight…”
