Catalyst- “a person or thing that precipitates an event”

    Days had passed since the group found the young Bloodline colt. Redemption and his band continued traveling towards the lower valley in hopes that the colt’s family was migrating towards the warm East Sea as well.

    Taking a position in the rear of the group next to Redemption, Mint watched the blue foal distrust still in her crimson eyes.

    “Why do you dislike that colt so much?” The grey stallion questioned.

    “I don’t.” Mint mumbled avoiding the stallion’s eyes, “His presence brings back bad memories I’ve tried forgetting.”

    “Mint,” Redemption sighed, “You’re locked in the past, and no one can help you if you keep avoiding whatever it is you’re avoiding.”

    Irritated, Mint slowed her pace drifting further behind the group. Watching her, Redemption shook his head and went to walk by his mare, Azalea.

    None of them understood it wasn’t something she cared to talk about. Her past left its scars on both body and soul. Looking towards the group, she spied Calix playing with the colt. The colts stirred up bittersweet memories of her foal-hood friend Dax. She hadn’t seen the brown colt since leaving her birth herd many years ago.

    Her birth herd lived far away towards the grasslands in the south. Born in the late spring, Mint was the youngest foal born that year. Her father Thanos, a powerful pale stallion covered in old scars was leader over a harem of six mares. Belladonna, a beautiful dark mare was lead mare, and Thanos’s favorite. Belladonna’s sister was Raven, Mint’s least favorite aunt. Zinnia and Bluebell always stayed together, and never had any foals. Jadzia, Bluebell’s older sister, was Mint’s favorite aunt. The youngest of Thanos’s harem was Mint’s mother, Sephie. Sephie was a gorgeous darker green version of Mint.

    Mint had three half-siblings. Her eldest brother was Belladonna’s son Khan. Khan was arrogant was his father’s favorite and often picked on Mint and her siblings. Mint’s only sister was Raven’s daughter Penelope. “Nel” was they all called her was a loner who preferred to spend her time wandering the vast grasslands of their home. Bean was Jadzia’s son and a small sickly foal who stayed by his mother’s side.

    Lost in her thoughts, Mint hardly felt the time pass and soon her group stopped for the day. A few other bands were camped in the area so Mint’s group started to mingle. A few of the mares grouped together to gossip while others shared useful information. Calix ran around playing tag with the other foals. Always the observer, Mint watched her friends failing to notice the colt approach her.

    “Why are you afraid of me?” he asked in a small voice.

    The question startled Mint and left her at a lost at how to respond.

    “Why would you think that?” Mint failed to meet the colt’s eyes.

    “You avoid me,” the colt tilted his head, “and I can just sense it like a fog surrounding you.”

    “I don’t hate you,” Mint mumbled. You’re just a catalyst tearing through the careful barriers I’ve crafted to keep my worst memories away.

I don't really like this story, but I wanted to continue on mint and Jericho's story even though I have nasty writer's block. This is mostly an info dump on Mint's birth herd.
