Description Finally here is my completed WIP/tutorial for the Sailor Moon Beruche Sculpture I did. This image was maybe the 20th attempt to fit all the pictures into one image. many times the image would get rejected for being too tall and then i would get an error message saying images had to be a maximum height of 10800, which is strange since many of my WIPs are a little bit taller. But since the image kept on getting rejected i just went with the height of 10800. I wished i could have made the pictures a little bigger.

All these pictures appear on my blog, as separate images, and I explain as sculpt. I also have some final painting pictures there, but they didnt fit in this image.

I've saved a blank WIP that seems to be accepted that is 1280x18000 that I use from now on instead of doing what ever size and hoping its accepted in the end.

Scale is 1/7
Sculpting material is Magic Sculpt, a self hardening epoxy clay/putty
I used clay shapers, hobby knife, my fingers as sculpting tools
working time was a little over a week. As for sculpture work, it was just a lot of sanding and carving to shape her up.

Beruche is a characher from the anime/mange Sailor Moon, by Naoko Takeuchi.

Thanks so much! When I look at this WIP image I can't believe I put all the images together like that and think of taking this WIP down. But I leave it up in case it is still useful ^_^

with what colors do you paint the doll and how you make the skin later so clean?

For this sculpture I painted her with craft acrylics first. The colors are Americana snow white, folk art french blue, and delta santa flesh. Then I do the shading with water mixable oils. Here I used duo aqua paints for the skin and hair. For the skin, usually I use brunt sienna and titanium white like I did here. Other times I use naples yellow and titanium white.

I’m not sure what you mean by β€œclean” but hopefully this covers it. Water mixable oils, or regular oil paints for that matter, are really great for blending colors by hand painting. There are brush strokes, but they are minimal and the eyes really do not focus on them but instead focus on the color blending. Brush stokes can be minimized by applying very little paint and spreading out what’s there.

Thanks!! I think some people who want to sculpt might get discouraged when they start out ( I know I did ^_^ ) so by showing the beginnings of the sculpt, which look less than ideal lol, it shows that the finished sculpt can look great if they keep at it.

This was absolutely incredible to examine through all the different stages, what it looks like and how it's created. And who would have guessed (no offence ) that it was going to end up so incredibly stunning and started as just that head with some eyes drawn on!!

This was amazing to look through. Really really incredible work. Just beautiful.

It's always so much fun watching your sculpting WIPs I like your Beruche, although I didn't know the character in the first place XD
Amazing how a few lumps of magic sculp turn into something nice and elegant ^^ When I read it took you a little over a week making this beauty, I didn't want to believe it. Cause judging from the photos I guess modelling the torso and her legs was like a lot of back and forth.

Thanks so much!! yeah it was a lot of sanding/carving, but it wasn't so bad because she was only 1/7 scale. If she was 1/4 I think I would still be working on her ^_^

Jezebel-Noe In reply to Pyramidcat [2010-08-10 17:07:14 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I think so, too ^^
In fact, I own 2 kits in 1/3 scale and 1/4 scale. They are HUGE and before the primer even touches one of the parts they will afford a hell of sanding and puttywork. I can't even try to imagine how long it will take to paint them completely -.-
1/7 or 1/8 is really so much nicer scale to work on ^^
