There's quite a bit of lore behind this, with a purpose behind the quirky details which I'll substantially articulate on in the future. If the picture really needs a summary, it's Pyre traveling through a pretty surreal location. Psychology (eventually) plays a big part. Also, flying very much isn't an option here.

Most of this was painted while I was feeling quite sick, during the hours when I couldn't sleep. As the picture didn't really turn out the way I wanted, I feel it was more of an experiment in trying to paint while feeling physically miserable. I don't think I really formed a new opinion because the experience and result turned out pretty much as I expected. It goes without saying that I'm looking forward to the next picture, which likely (hopefully) won't be produced under similar circumstances.

Painting directly in black and white threw me off quite a bit, and I think it's something I'd like to try more often.

This was done in Paint Tool SAI.

(This was supposed to be Nightmare, not Melancholy... why I mislabeled it and I didn't notice is beyond me.)
