Description
Notes: I suggest drawing all the hands here (just for practice)....and see if you guys improve or notOh, and on another note, never try to hide the hands when drawing a picture. After all, forcing yourself to draw them on a body is the best way to practice ^^.
Finally, never be afraid to use references. Use your own hands if you must (unless your hands are like mine...fat and chubby and generally unappealing), or take a picture of someone's hand. Imagination and memory can only take the technical side of drawing to a certain point until you have drawing enough to master it.
-----------
Sorry, it's a bit big. These hands were compiled in a week's time through observing people and drawing hands in life-drawing
Also, I'm not a professional (yet xD;; ), so there still may be mistakes in my drawing. but I tried my best ^^.
People has been asking me for a tutorial and I've been meaning to do one for...the longest time, ever.
I know there are a lot of hand tutorials out there, but since it's my favourite body part to draw, I though, "why not?". I personally can't get enough of looking at different tutorials on doing stuff, so....yah
I hope it's helpful even a little. The references at the bottom are for everyone to look at and, well, reference, if need be.

as an art teacher, who has instructed several YOUNG students, I offer the suggestion of the circles for knuckles .. so my students will actually think about putting knuckles INTO their drawings. XD
the hand as a whole is good and all, but sometimes piece by piece is a good place to start them learning.

ahh, i forgot to add that I don't deny that you should start piece by piece in a certain way though, just for me, not the circle=joints mannequin way. But then again, it's just me, and I've only had like...two art teachers xD;;~ The rest has all been books .

I use the 'circle-joints' with a particular student of mine who is a bit more... mechanically minded, if you would. one who knows ridged moving parts well, but not organic, so the ball-joints for fingers helps some get the shape and curl, the length and more importantly, the number of segments. while also helping prevent the cut-edged knuckles I was getting when I first started instruction.
make sense?

But telling them to start piece by piece might get them to focus to much on pieces by themselves, which is something a lot of amateur artists start out doing and end up with poses that look out of proportion or stiff. I personally think that you have to start off studying things as a whole. I always found the mannequin thing will make a drawing end up looking extremely stiff and unyielding. But perhaps it's a personal thing, but none of my art teachers ever told me to start off drawing with the mannequin circles.

Well, it DOES depend, and I have the advantage of teaching individual students... that allows me to alter the curriculum accordingly. I've found that some students do well with an overall approach, and some really have to be broken down into studies involving each part. I've had both kinds of students.
but that was more what I was getting at with my comment.

Again, great tutorial! Especially the reference to drawing the 'ball' joints VS drawing - and focussing on - the hand as a whole really made me think of how I could try to structure my hands differently; and perhaps get a better result.
