Reblog from my Tumblr ?Please read my commentary before asking any more questions~! thanks
Finished Work:
Edit: I've had a few repeated question of how I work my lineart into the drawing.
I'd like to clarify that i don't really actually have a clean line-art. I have clean-sketches that I work under, but they're not what I personally call lineart. If you zoom in, they are very messy. I do merge the layers together at some point in step 5, and I continue to literally work the colours of the lineart into the skin (which is why i turned the sketch layer into overlay so the colours become very similar and nice to work with). That way I can get an almost none-lineart quality.
also, if you're wondering about canvas sizes, check out my journal about them: [link]
The program I used was Painttool SAI, but I think you can achieve similar effects via photoshop with a low-opacity textured brushes.
I hope this helped : ) Sorry it's so darn long. I kept it as short as I could but it's still a pretty long process.
Please keep in mind this is more of a guide to my painting process and how I technically go about doing this; It's not going to automatically teach you how to render or understand structure or anatomy (which I hope I will cover in more tutorials in the future.), which is very important, of course, to the painting itself. That's why I'll be slowly going through and doing more tutorials on anatomy and structure in the next few months, hopefully
A good practice for rendering is actually to do still life and human sketches. preferably with a pencil, and not digitally (yet)
Step-by-step animation:
In the mean time, have some of my other anatomy tutorials:

I know this is old, but its helped me get past my frustrations with digital painting and finally finish some, even though im not at the fully render stage yet im happy with my progress.
My goal this year is to push my colors and lighting/shadow in my painting then focus when i feel more comfortable in that with the rendering work .
thank you!

Question: what kind of brush texture or brush shape do you use for the marker tool for shading and Β rendering ?

Omg this makes me feel so much better about my art, I do naturally messy line art due to unsteady hands, and most tutorials don't show the Overlay/Multiply method.

Thanks for the tut, but I feel this one is for more advanced painters or users of SAI. For begginners like me, it does not help a lot especially because of the brush settings (I know we are suppose to "try", by it would be nice to have a stating point besides the default settings).
[edit] it is a lovely drawing and pain. Wish I was o far ahead like you

She said what brush she uses, but the settings I guess is down to you to test and see what works for you. As of course, you don't want to copy her shading style down to a tee.
It takes practice and hard work of years and years to get happy with a style that suits you.

Lovely art and tutorial! It's helped me out a lot but I was wondering (I even looked through all the comments to see if anyone else has asked this... >.<) do you change any of the other settings on the marker tool?
I see that you changed the blending and persistence, is there any other changes you make? And what settings do you use for the water tool? I haven't used any digital art programs for a few years and I'm trying to figure out what kind of settings I like! I used to use photoshop but lost it so I turned to using sai and have been really enjoying it. ^^Β
Thank you, this tutorial has really given me motivation to continue on with digital art again!

I use Painttool sai and I can say that I just suck at drawing in general. I'm just trying to get used to drawing with it. I can draw good enough on paper, just not well.Β

I've already tried out digital art, with some sucess but I can't help but feel like it is... Impersonal? I must say I feel the same way about writing on my laptop my fanfictions. I like to feel the paint on the paper, the brushes in my hand, the whole "ritual" of working in traditional ways. My hope it's to achieve a level of detail and light/shadow equivalent to the digital means. In my last pieces I'm getting to it slowly, like one detail per work. My last one were the breast bones, almost 3D like.

the only medium that can achieve digital detail and feel is probably oil or acrylic; or rather, digital often mimics those two mediums, and you'd have to use extremely large canvases. Digital's cheap and easily fixable, perfect for commercial usage, but this is why fine-art, gallery-type artists will not use it. Digital doesn't do well traditionally, and similarly, traditional art doesn't do as well when viewed digitally rather than in person. whichever medium an artist chooses though, their draftsmanship skills doesn't change though

I've really only done art in traditional mediums, and I'm only just now beginning to dabble in digital art. Β I still prefer working traditionally, but I've realized that working strictly in traditional art can really limit you. Β It's really difficult to make a living when you are only working in oils. Β Of course, it's still very hard to make a living as a digital artist, but I feel like it opens up some doors as far as commissions and creating a following. Β The speed and the fact that you don't need to purchase paint and canvas or a studio to work in alone are huge positives.
I'm going to continue to work in traditional mediums while exploring digital art. Β A lot of traditional artists look down on digital art. Β I think it's a fear that it will render them obsolete, and I also think there's some jealousy because of how fast an accomplished digital artist can churn out fantastic work, as well as jealousy over the fact that digital art makes it easier to make a living. Β They probably don't realize how much skill goes into digital. Β I've only just begun and it's a really challenging adjustment. Β My hope is to eventually be able to make some sort of living off my art, and maybe at some point in the future I will be good enough at digital art that I can use it to do that.

and airbrush sets are extremely expensive ; it's much cheaper to invest in a tablet since airbrush sets and colours can run you up to $500-$1000, not to mention it's a lot more time consuming just to mimic digital medium. on the other hand, the watercolour/pencil crayon ones still looks very traditional and not at all digital ^^.Β
also, i'd like to point out that this all this artist does is copying other artists. I'd be a lot more impressed if they were doing their own work. It's a lot more difficult when it comes to figuring out what colours to put down yourself compared to copying an artist

it depends on you, and what you want to do with your art, really. I like to have the canvas big enough so that it prints out well on a 12 x 18 inch paper. i've got a guide on canvas size here:Β
Canvas sizes - inches and dpi and pixelsThis is a sort of guide on canvas sizes, inches, dpi and pixel x pixels.
when it came to canvas sizes, I always kind of assumed that inches belonged with dpi and pixels were just pixels and that everyone knew that; but i read a whole bunch of comments on a tumblr blog where someone asked about canvas sizes, and SO MANY people were replying with things such as, "4000x4000 px at 300 dpi" or "2000x2000 px at 200dpi".
and I guess not everyone quite understands what dpi's really used for xD.
DPI = Dots per Inch. It means how many dots will be printed per inch.
DPI is actually used for printing purposes. It shows the printer how much pixels to print per inch, literally. A common printer (at home or even at a lot of printing stores) at best prints at 150dpi most of the time actually; there are some super duper great printers that can print REALLY fine that can go up to ...apparently a lot more xD; #dpi, so that's why everyone usually suggests saving your project at 300dpi; most printers are f

When you duplicated the sketchy lines in step 5, did you merge them both with the characters or just one layer?
