Description

A deadly threat was to meet the seemingly animal skeletons in deserts. First of all, they were plants, second – they were carnivorous and had a deadly toxin in all of their tissues. A scavenger could try to eat this ‘bones’ if it could break them, but soon would die from poisoning.

A sapient scavenger would start sending prisoners to the Enormous desert.

They were corvids. Perhaps they were the closest thing a dinosaur (or any reptile in general) can get to humanoid bodyplan. Already standing semi-upright due to loss of tail, they also moved from jungle forests to savannahs and lost some feathers to better regulate their temperature. The two fingers, one being fused third and fourth, became a hand, though with restrictions, as they couldn’t pronate hands and these fingers, while being opposed, weren’t truly opposable. Instead, while not moving, they used their legs, or, as alternative, created tools using several individuals in process. So they had a less individual lifestyle, as they truly needed others to help even with using these tools.

However, they were not the only sophont on their planet. As it had four major landmasses, sophonts could develop without crossing. Flightless corvids were leaving on the biggest of these. One day, their flying, also sapient relatives migrated here from their freezing northernmost continent. And right now, peace or at least extinction was not an option here. Environment made them monsters, and they felt only disguise for scavengers. They observed cultures of their flightless relatives and combination of said two factors made them not to drive said scavengers to extinction, but to show them that their lifestyle is ‘miserable’. A promising young race with non-conflicting nature was turned into slaves and bred into many different forms. But these new forms never abandoned their sapience, as their flying conquerors wanted them to suffer.

However, there were two other sophonts which were left unnoticed by these flying menaces. One was a pterosaur, another was crocodile. They didn’t know about anything other their own continents, and started their own technological development. When they met each other and noticed corvids, both were horrified by this atrocious way of living.

Meanwhile, flightless corvids didn’t have anything to lose anymore. For three thousand years some individuals were spreading the fact that revolution is a great mission of their fractured kin. After that, with ray of light in face of newcoming hostile towards flying ones other sophonts, they started ruining this empire of pain from the inside. Will of flying ones to amuse themselves turned bad to them.

Pictured the plant which started it all.
