Description

Somewhere in the dark of planet, which was lighted by two white dwarves, lived eight-legged ‘ferrets’, which breathed nitrogen synthesized by plants with much liquid.

Said ‘ferrets’ are very numerous by standards of their planet. They eat plants and some animals which are smaller than them, and also usually live in burrows. Their three pairs of eyes are very useful in their dark surroundings, as they themselves have bioluminescent markings which differ in species.

If ‘ferret’ ever goes on surface, that would be a rather short trip. Sometimes it may find new source of food or new home. If so, it would be really lucky to win its game of life for another day, as surface world, despite seemingly being desert place, contains two main dangers.

First is the burrow-stealer. This predator doesn’t have any eyes, but instead it has keen sense of smell. ‘Ferrets’’ underground tunnels entries very usually are getting closed or updated, so burrow-stealer won’t feel it, or wouldn’t be able to get in. But if a ‘ferret’ goes on surface, it may be more easily spotted by a burrow-stealer. It wouldn’t attack right away, and instead would wait until ‘ferret’ goes to new burrow or to older. Only then it attacks, and enters the underground burrow system to hunt more. Eventually it will have to leave it, as ‘ferrets’ would leave it as well, as carnivore right in your house would be more dangerous than a carnivore outside it. And, both ‘ferrets’ and burrow-stealers are both preyed upon by second danger, the apex predator of their planet.

They are called terrors. Unlike both of terrestrial kin, they have acute eyesight, with two pairs of big eyes and three additional. They also are hexapod, with their frontmost limbs becoming sharp talons. But their main trait is flight. They soar dark skies on their four wings and hide in the fogs, collecting their toll. They are the far less numerous than both previously mentioned animals, being apex predators, but they don’t have much dangers of their own. Uniquely among animals of this planet, their young is dependent on parents. While hunts are mostly instinctual, there is a short period of education. By that means, terrors are the most intelligent beings this planet may offer.

Pictured a ‘ferret’ which noticed a small plant and tries to take it into its burrow. A combination of overpopulation and hunger made its job, and several ‘ferrets’ already left the colony. This also could, but noticed a plant. However, this is still a danger: fog as near, and terror may suddenly snatch it.
