Had to read the other comments since I thought this drawing meant it was confirmed he wasn't returning. I would be devastated. Ness has been one of my main/favorite since the start. If Lucas wasn't returning, it wouldn't be that much of a big deal to me as he's only been in Brawl. But Ness has been in all 3, so it wouldn't be right to take him out.
Sadly, though. It might be a 50/50 here. Lucas was going to replace Ness in Melee and as well as Brawl, obviously enough no replacing happened, but it was considered with each game. I hope that doesn't happen for Smash 4.. Also, nice drawing btw!<:

While that is true and with the thought of losing him, I have seen much more art and talk about him, but at the same time, they considered replacing him for each game. That's what scaring me. They might consider it again. Ness should be a staple to the series since he's one of the original 12. It just wouldn't make sense. It's like taking Mario out because we already got 3 other iconic video game characters or because we have Luigi. It's just not right. But alas, it's also the 4th and maybe they already have seen the Ness love? I sure hope so. Lucas was fun and is definitely a fun character to play as, especially since you'll go flying but it won't be until you basically reach 300% damage before you actually die xD Ah that always angered my cousins hehe

I comfort myself by saying that there's really no logical reason for them to get rid of him. The Mother series has always been really popular in Japan, Mother 2/EarthBound is a game that America is also familiar with, and it's also getting a larger and larger fanbase, Ness is a very unique fighter and one of the originals... and with the rerelease of EarthBound on the VC and how well it sold, it just wouldn't make sense for them to not include him.

So that when they do announce he'll be in it, they will get a lot of attention.

Actually, they considered replacing Ness with Lucas in Melee. They didn't because lack of time. Lucas was also supposed to replace Ness, again, in Brawl but ended up putting both of them in Brawl instead. So there might be a 50/50 chance here of losing Ness. Sorry for butting in, but Lucas didn't replace Ness in Melee cause Mother 3 was delayed. (not cause of lack of time)
Also I believe Ness made it back in Brawl cause Sakurai realised how popular he became. Sakurai will be a fool to cut Ness.
He'll likely be confirmed when the game comes out, like most unlockables do.
(I personally wouldn't mind too bad if Lucas did make it in without Ness cause I do main him over Ness, but Earthbound is the series' biggest game, due to the release in the west)

I said Lucas almost replaced Ness in Melee but wasn't due to time. And Ness made into Brawl but he was almost downright replaced by Lucas. Ness, so far, has not be replaced, but was considered to be replaced in Melee and Brawl.

I was stating the reason why Lucas didn't (but almost) replaced Ness in Melee, it wasn't because there wasn't enough time, it was because Lucas' game (Mother 3) was delayed.

Actually it was. DYKGaming did a video on it and had stated that it was due to time. However, with the Brawl one, I don't think I remember the reason correctly but I know that Melee's reason is correct.
