Description This has been my big project for the last couple of months. His name is Basil. He's made of super sculpey, tinfoil, wire, and apoxy putty. I estimate that I've put about 100 hours into this sculpture, but I'm still pretty slow. Basil is about 12" tall at the fin tips, and about 16" by 11" at his longest and widest. He is going to be baked and then painted, which I am really excited about. Hurrah!

I see scales in my dreams.

A wonderful sculpture. Very creative.
I'm just wondering, what inspired you to make the Basilisk this way? Instead of the more Snake like looking one? It look more Dragon like than serpentine. What kind of abilities does it have? Does it breathe fire? Is it eyes still kill? Is it more Basilisk or Dragon?

Amazing work! I can only imagine of how long it must have taken to have made this piece, even before the painting (even Warhammer miniatures would get made quickly compared to this!) It takes real passion to keep on wokring on such a project, and you should be proud that you made it.

Such detail!!!  How do you manage to get such fine texture using super sculpey??  I find it difficult even using sculpey firm!

Thank-you!  I admit it's tricky.  Having fine tools helps a lot, also this sculpture is pretty big, so I can get away with more, haha.

no offense but a Basilisk is a snake with deadly eyes fangs and posien, spiders flee from it.

Yeah, that's one take on it. It's what they did in Harry Potter for example. But there are lots of different ideas on what it could look like.

I can't wait until I see him painted either. Wow. He is going to be beautiful. He already is.. he will just be MORE beautiful. What colours were you thinking?

It will be soon I hope! He is practically done being painted. Just a couple little details that need to be taken care of, but which I can never find time for because he isn't kept at my house. C'est la vie! I have two more sculptures in the works though. Cheers!

That is not a basilisk. A basilisk is basically a king cobra. They just have a stare that turns people into stone. This, my friend, is a dragon. Still, amazing, though.

Quantum-Kid In reply to evanthebrony [2011-10-21 23:01:01 +0000 UTC]

Well, sir, since a basilisk is, in fact, a mythological creature, I can make it look like whatever I so desire. And, I think you will find that for the most part, a basilisk is generally considered to be part bird and part snake, similar to a cockatrice. I know that in Harry Potter the basilisk does look like a giant snake, but that would be one of the few places you will find such a rendition of a basilisk. Thanks for the comment!

evanthebrony In reply to Quantum-Kid [2011-10-22 15:08:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but no description, well, ever has described dragon-like wings. I happened to be quite versed in mythology my self, and know that the Basilisk is in fact, the King Cobra, and the mythology surrounding it was just superstition. It's sort of like the Tanuki. Even though it is techgnically the same creature, it's basic look varies in fiction. Still, that is what a basilisk is,

Quantum-Kid In reply to evanthebrony [2011-10-23 02:04:04 +0000 UTC]

I'm not arguing on the point of what a basilisk is considered in real life. Just that what I have sculpted is a basilisk as far as I'm concerned, and that is all that matters. The fins on his back aren't wings, as there is no musculature there to support any flight; they are simply fins. Normally, when he is not acting all aggressive as he is portrayed here, those fins lay flat along his back. They are used to make him appear larger than he is, as well as for cooling off in hot areas. The long and short of it is that, a mythological basilisk is generally considered to be part bird and part snake. Thus, I have taken these ideas and remolded them into my own design. I will grant that the design is similar to that of your traditional dragon, but this is a basilisk.
