Description Time: 3.5 hours
Made with Inkscape.
Vectors used:

The Date by
*HalfDeathShadow

Blanket Woona by
*Mamandil

Part two: Nodes and outlines

Part three: Landscapes and special effects

This also works for vectors made from other drawings or your own sketches. Frames from the show are used as an example because that's what most people do. Using the show as a reference or looking at other vectors from the show is a great way to learn.

Discussion posts- r/mylittlepony and r/mlpvectors

This is a tutorial for people interested in making fan art that looks exactly like the show, so please feel free to ignore it if you have no interest in that. I'm not going to try to convince you to watch ponies, I submitted this only to pony groups.

Updated Oct. 9 2012. Overhauled a lot of the wording, added some new images, fixed the slightly blurred images. And if you didn't see it already, there is now a part two to this that goes over how to make outlines and use nodes.

I'm totally new with this.... I'm not sure what to do but I'm interested in learning! I noticed that Inkscape is for Mac but I have windows... Would I be able to use something like photoshop?

spier17 In reply to dashiedream [2013-02-15 03:23:17 +0000 UTC]

I'm also new to vectors, I made my first a couple days ago (Pinkie ), and used Inkscape on windows 7, the installer is on the inkscape site under "official release packages". You can use photoshop, I also have CS5, but it is so much more complicated than Inkscape, and the quality isn't as good.

Quasdar In reply to FrankRT [2012-12-23 03:50:59 +0000 UTC]

Read on Vector Guide #2 which goes over just that With the right node placement and node handle snapping it's possible to make all your strokes very consistent.

I have still yet to find advice on creating original poses. Tracing is easy, but figuring out things such as body and stroke proportions, or how a pony should be drawn from a certain perspective is challenging.

Check out MLP drawing school's guides and useful links , they have a lot of tutorials for that sort of thing.

ak399 In reply to ??? [2012-10-23 22:49:37 +0000 UTC]

This is all true for tracing and duplication.
For personal style, feel free to vary the width of the line in the proper places.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Quasdar In reply to ak399 [2012-10-24 00:35:49 +0000 UTC]

The line width changes in the show too, like on pinkie's mane, and that's fine, what I'm warning about are wobbly outlines that are thick in some places and thin in others when they should be consistent.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ak399 In reply to Quasdar [2012-10-24 00:55:28 +0000 UTC]

Yes I know, and for tracing that'd be bad, but as an artistic choice it could be alright.

What video player are you using? In Media Player Classic Home Cinema, you go here to save a still image [link] and in VLC here [link]

MPC HC can be better at playing high definition content, but it takes a little bit more setup than VLC .

I don't even trace over my own sketches or screenshots anymore, I just reference and do the vectors "free style"

This doesn't really help me with learning HOW to vector. T_T I kinda want to (I mainly prefer Gimp, though), but... I'm nervous. All these weird things (nodes, etc.) confuse me.

You can see a time lapse video of the vector making process here [link]

GIMP can't create vectors, you should really give inkscape a shot.

Wow, there's some nice stuff here. The show actually got me back into drawing again, and I'd spent a bit doodling in vector to emulate the style of the show. I'm quite sure my vectors are nowhere near good enough for this group, but could I get a suggestion of a good group to inflict them upon for feedback?
