Description
Time: 3.5 hoursMade with Inkscape.
Vectors used:
The Date by
*HalfDeathShadow
Blanket Woona by
*Mamandil
Part two: Nodes and outlines
Part three: Landscapes and special effects
This also works for vectors made from other drawings or your own sketches. Frames from the show are used as an example because that's what most people do. Using the show as a reference or looking at other vectors from the show is a great way to learn.
Discussion posts- r/mylittlepony and r/mlpvectors
This is a tutorial for people interested in making fan art that looks exactly like the show, so please feel free to ignore it if you have no interest in that. I'm not going to try to convince you to watch ponies, I submitted this only to pony groups.

Updated Oct. 9 2012. Overhauled a lot of the wording, added some new images, fixed the slightly blurred images. And if you didn't see it already, there is now a part two to this that goes over how to make outlines and use nodes.

Thank you so much for this. As an artist attempting to learn inkscape from scratch, there aren't words to describe how indispensible this is.

Any specific reasons? I stopped watching because most of it was ridiculous, predictable, 90% of the designs were mediocre mishmash of whatever, and even the Mane 6 lack depth (my preference of depth, anyways) and lacked a believable amount of change (sure, choose a character trait and run with it, but that doesn't mean it must remain fixed and never develop, or it can't be allowed to be less significant in their decision-making/thinking then previously [when they were young and stuff seemed to be more significant than it really was]). Now, what is your complaint?

Have you even read what I said? Did I say that cartoons suck?
I think you all should analyze what I said before replying. That would spare me to explain again. I didn't say it's bad to like this show, I said it's sad to be obsessed with it. I have nothing against this kind of tutorial, but I find it sad that it makes the frontpage of an art site. I still like the cartoons of my childhood but come on, all this masquerade starts to be ridiculous and pathetic.

Yes I did, and oh surprise, I didn't become obsessed with it.
I'm not a hater, just someone sick of all the pony stuff going on. Learn the difference. It's here everyday, everywhere on the Internet. You can't escape it and this is just pathetic.

A "hater" is someone who forwardly voices close-minded, negative opinions on something they're too dense to give good thought to.
From the way this conversation is going, I wouldn't list you as a hater. MLP:FIM has a large and fandom that can be pretty obnoxious at times. It's just an observation, not blatant hate.

SomeFrenchToast In reply to LadyBlackmoonsMoo [2012-05-13 18:54:29 +0000 UTC]
Thank you both. I really don't hate the series itself, nor its fans, it's just the fandom that becomes overly annoying. I usually keep it for myself because I too can have my fanboy moments about what I like. But really, this was the last straw. It's going too far and it's tiring to always see the same stuff, over and over, everyday. People should be more quiet about it, I think.

Then try something called ignoring it, if it says pony then don't look at it instead of commenting on how annoyed you are. It makes you look like some jerk who looks for "pony shit" just to comment on how you hate it to make you look "cool".

Weasyl has an option to ignore certain tags and keywords. DeviantArt does not, and it's not like it's going to make a Pony Filter the same as they have a Mature Tag filter. It's hard to ignore, you have to admit. You don't have to "look for it".

To make me look cool? Really now? Have you read what I said? It's everywhere, how do you want to ignore it? Don't have I the right to share my opinion as much as he who loves it? Obviously not.

FRivArts In reply to SomeFrenchToast [2013-03-24 18:32:03 +0000 UTC]
Weasyl has search tag filters. Really awesome. But it's also harder to find awesome art there and the front page looks like FA; which is okay, but I'd rather see more quadrupeds, "feral" comics, landscapes, photography, full paintings, and humans. If you're not here for variety, though, I do recommend Weasyl.

Yeah but you are talking about grown men liking the show on a vector tutorial. There's a thin line between voicing your opinion and just being rude. You said that you "found it sad that grown men obsess over a show" did you not expect people to defend their obsession?
If you don't want to ignore it then I suggest either avoiding the areas where it is most common or living with it until it ends/dies down a bit more.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SomeFrenchToast In reply to jv9ufxcy [2012-05-13 20:01:37 +0000 UTC]
I suggest you to learn to let others have their opinion and express it. I don't see where I've been rude in my comments. It's not about what I want, it's about what I can and cannot do. I can't ignore it because it's simply everywhere, as I keep saying. Of course I expected fans to respond, but did you expect me not to defend my opinion as well? It's not because you don't like something that you should keep it for yourself. As long as it's done respectfully - like I did -, I don't see the problem in expressing an opinion.

Well that's how I viewed your statement. I took it in an insulting way because you went to an art tutorial to complain about a fandom when said deviation had not even hit the front page but many pony art groups.

SomeFrenchToast In reply to jv9ufxcy [2012-05-13 20:56:38 +0000 UTC]
It did hit the front page when I commented on it, that's how I stumbled upon it. I wouldn't go and look in the groups to choose a deviation to make this comment on.

Okay then, I see how you found it but why did you find this place appropriate to? This isn't exactly the "Brony Fanart Headquarters"
People make fanart for everything, you learn to live with it in time.

FRivArts In reply to jv9ufxcy [2013-03-24 18:36:08 +0000 UTC]
He seems to specifically find the obsession sad; not the show, not faning over it. You have to admit, obsession gets out of and fast, like people obsessed with animal rights and Twilight. And the fanart might lessen in time, but as it is, it is hard to ignore without some program to wipe it off your page.

Yeha, adults should watch adult programs.
Like idiots living together in a house and gettign watched by cameras 24/7.
Or music producers verbally destroying young singers.
Now that is high quality entertainment.
