Description Traditional drawing of a hummingbird (Green-crowned brilliant - Heliodoxa jacula). It was fun to draw all these iridescent feathers (too bad my scanner messed up the colours and the contrast a bit...)! It could be a bit better, but I gave up drawing all these feathers properly after a while.

Every time I think I can't get any more stunned with one of your new drawings, I get stunned again.
So, what do I like about this drawing? Well first off, you can hardly tell a difference between this & the reference. The colors of the feathers are very bright, & I still think you were very careful about the details of them. The wings are perfect as well! I can almost hear them buzzing. I also really like how smooth/dark the background is. It makes you question if this was drawn on white paper. Lol! But of course, the best part of this is the hummingbird's head, I think. The eyes really bring it to life! Once again, you've made another masterpiece!
I haven't seen this kind, I don't think. I do see lots of hummingbirds around here though. It's funny, you hear this deep/louder buzzing, & almost sounds like a giant bumblebee, but then it's just a cute little bird hovering around.

Ehehehe!
Thank you very much! Well, I can see many differences. Secret technique for the background: black Copic Ciao base layer + colored pencil powder (black and different shades of green)! That's why it's so smooth without lines.
I've never seen a hummingbird... Now I'm jealous...

Haha, that emote!
You're very welcome! Ok, so maybe you do see many differences...it doesn't matter. The differences are your own creation, & something you should be proud of. I bet you didn't even use a grid...?   Markers really do make a nice effect! I can't wait to experiment with them! I know, I know, colored pencils first.   Lol!
You've seen no hummingbirds in Germany?! Well then, come to my house & we'll go bird watching!

Quelchii In reply to shaynaJreddick [2015-06-01 19:56:50 +0000 UTC]

I didn't use the grid. But the sketch for this drawing took me ages (... but I used a set quare).
Yes, of course colored pencils first!
We have no hummingbirds in Germany (we've got kingfishers, but only in south and not in north Germany). I've not even seen them in the "Weltvogelpark Walsrode" (world's largest bird park; I've been there a few times), because they always hide from me... Ok, I'm on my way.

shaynaJreddick In reply to Quelchii [2015-06-01 21:23:54 +0000 UTC]

I believe you. You should stick with the grid.   Well, maybe not for every drawing...
Hmph...well, ok.
Aww, the Kingfishers won't let you see them? I assume you wanted to take pictures? Maybe they're camera-shy.   I don't see hummingbirds too often. Sparrows & Robins are all over. I held a little Robin a couple weeks ago. He/she liked perching on my hand... ...or it was just too terrified to move. Lol!
Lol! You can fly now?

Lol! No need to sulk. Just buy proper colored pencils and try to color skin!
Lol! Yes, we've got many robins, sparrows and tomtits as well...
Yes, I can fly now! I do what I want!

I'm waiting for a good deal first. You think I'm going to buy $200 pencils?!   On the topic of pencils, look at the sky in this photo: 40.media.tumblr.com/2666da24c6… Student question: what would be the best method to draw blue sky like that? Because the gradual transition from dark to light is very smooth & subtle, & I'm just wondering how you could draw that without leaving "pencil marks".  The powder method? Would you do a marker base layer?
Aww, tomtits are so cute! We don't have them around here.
Lol! All right then, you should be arriving any time now...why aren't you?

Quelchii In reply to shaynaJreddick [2015-06-02 20:51:01 +0000 UTC]

Ok, that's true. But you really don't want to know how much money I spend on my drawing stuff (neither do I)... ok... plants are probably worse.
I think that I would use 2-3 shades of blue and the blender for the marker base layer and then the powder method. I've drawn something like that just with colored pencils and it was pretty grainy when I scanned it (Black Swan background for example).
Hey, at least you've got hummingbirds...
I said that I can fly now, but I didn't mention that I can fly very fast!

shaynaJreddick In reply to Quelchii [2015-06-02 23:03:57 +0000 UTC]

I think I already know. Copic Ciao marker prices... You sure know how to buy expensive things. Lol!
Ok...blender for the marker base layer? Uhh, how do you blend markers?   But I think that's what I'd like to try (I'm not drawing this until around autumn), because I want it to turn out very well...I have to draw this.
Yeah, hummingbirds...& hawks! sta.sh/08ajxdlglnp
Well then, how'd you manage post a dA comment while in mid-air?

Quelchii In reply to shaynaJreddick [2015-06-03 16:47:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I know!
Copic "0" (or colourless blender) is just a marker without colour (only the solvent). You can use it to brighten up some colours, to prevent sharp edges (!), to blend bright colours or to correct mistakes a bit. For blending of dark colours I would just use a marker with colour (if you want to blend dark blue with normal blue I would use the normal blue for blending).
A plotting emoticon... so why is this photo so important to you? "Tell me!!!!"
Ok. We've got hawks, too! Here some picture from Walsrode by the way: www.utricularien.de/startseite…
How? Magic!

shaynaJreddick In reply to Quelchii [2015-06-03 20:39:46 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. I wonder if any other marker brands have a colorless blender. I'll have to look. Thanks for the advice!
"What if I say, no?"    Well, ok. Ever since my mom's trip to Greece in 2011, she's always had a thing for plants & doors on a Greek island. I want to edit this photo (different door, floor, etc.) draw it, & give it to her for her b-day. I hope it turns out good!
Lol! That first picture! A bird with long black eyelashes!
Magic? Lol! But I'm still not convinced you're really flying over the Atlantic...I mean...when is there ever wifi in the middle of an ocean?

Ok, that makes sense! I'm sure it'll turn out great if you heed my advices!
Lol! Even birds have to look great and do their best in front of a camera!

I made only test for a female character - I got Gamora, so with a friend, who got Jane we decided we won also Thor and Star-Lord and we can exchange sometimes
But seriously, Steve is mine
I'm exhausted after Russian exam and whole day of classes after, tomorrow another exam, this time translation and few free days to study hard for next week's exams. I will make it more pleasant - for Russian oral exam in a week I have to choose an article, about 2 pages - for 100% it will be connected with Avengers or art

I realised this is the answer why lately I often see everything green (not because of my Brother's reddish screen )

I need some rest today, tomorrow back to studying.
I wonder if Russia also was so - maybe there will be some long articles about him (Локи)
