Description
I wanted to take a break, but then I noticed that I haven't drawn Loki in his Jotun (frost giant) form yet. And an inverted drawing is like a "break" compared to my "normal" mixed media drawings, because this technique saves a lot of time.So here we have an evil Jotun Loki freezing Heimdall with the Casket of Ancient Winters, before he can strike him with his sword (and a colored pencil
Reference was a screencap of Tom Hiddleston as Loki from the movie "Thor" (2011).
Of course I inverted the colours of this picture (= negative) in Photoshop before I started to draw (I used the normal and the inverted picture for reference).
Ursus sketch pad DIN A4 190g/m²; Faber-Castell Polychromos artists' colour pencils; time: ~14 hours

Another inverted drawing, huh? You really like this technique I take it. You should, it’s a good technique and you’re good at it, getting better I can tell. This one should have been more difficult than a few of the others as it has more colours. One other you only had to use blues, getting yellows and oranges when inverted. The next challenge should perhaps be to make an inverted drawing using a reference where your first thought is to draw it normally? Could be fun maybe.
Lights, highlights and shadows, shines. All of that which makes the image seem real is well executed here. Ah! It just looks so good. Everything you put up on deviantart seem to be of top quality.
I mean, the light filtering through the ice he’s conjured with the casket looks great, out of focus and all. His cloak looks almost velvety soft, the metal in his armor is very shiny, reflecting the light properly… Just so good. I need to stop before I work myself up too much. On to the next drawing!

Hehe, this technique is just so much fun! I have some other images on my list, but this sound also like it could be fun and a challenge!
Thank you very much! Most of the parts of this drawing look so soft/smooth, because I used "colored pencil powder", by the way. That's pretty helpful.

Wait can you please explain what inverting the drawing does? How does it help you draw?
And this is amazing btw!

For an inverted drawing you just chose a reference, invert (negative: white = black, orange = blue, green = pink/purple and so on) the colours in a program, then draw it like that, take a picture of your drawing and invert that. It's pretty helpful if you want to draw a very dark picture. If you take a look at this drawing Loki (Inverted Drawing) you can see it better. The invert is much easier to draw, because you just have to draw a few lines and shades (everything else is white), so it saves a lot of time. Or for example if you have a picture with a sky full of stars you just have to draw black dots in the invert. And it's always fun and a big surprise if you invert your drawing at the end.
Thank you!

You just need a program which turns the colours to "negative".

I can see how these lighter colors would be easier, but...how is 14 hours of drawing considered a "break"? I'm starting to wonder if you know what a "real" break is. Lol!
About the drawing: I just love it! It results in looking exactly like the screencap, so your accuracy in all the inverted colors is honestly mind-boggling. This whole inverted idea is really neat, by the way! I ought to try it sometime!

Very cool effect! And I don't see Loki as 'evil' for freezing Heimdall, especially since Heimdall had already betrayed Loki and was actively attacking him at the time. Not to mention the fact that Heimdall had always hated Loki (in the myths, if not the Marvel films). *spits at Heimdall* Personally, if I'd been Loki, I'd have dropped the frozen Heimdall off the Bifrost....

Lol! Suddenly I imagine Loki (in a cute comic style) thinking "Wait a second! I forgot something...", turning back and dropping the frozen Heimdall off the Bifrost.
I think Heimdall just want to protect the realm, but I agree that he seems to betray his kings (Loki in Thor 1 and Odin in Thor 2) all the time for Thor...

Draconicat In reply to Quelchii [2015-04-05 23:44:00 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome! And I love your mental image of Loki belatedly remembering to take care of his little Heimdall problem.... *snickers* Maybe Heimdall secretly lusts for Thor, and is therefore bitterly jealous of Loki's relationship with him, even when it isn't the friendliest...?

Really cool technique, I didn't know you did that! *runs off to gallery to see more*
It looks so strange when inverted. And you'd have to be so careful to get the values/hues to match, to make it look right!
