I love how effortlessly you use the concept of negative space. What do you do to plan out your pieces? Do you make a sketch, use a reference, or just go in balls deep and go with it? All three?

I do a quick sketch for reference and just dive in. There are things I should actually plan out, but most of the stuff is done from a quick sketch, or in the case of Mewtwo, a quick sketch and a lighting reference. A surprising lack of planning actually goes into my paintings. It's the ink drawings that tend to get more planning before I dive in.
Probably because with painting, if I screw up, I just cover it with a layer of paint and try again.

Ain't that the truth! using a lighting reference is an awesome idea, In all of your work I can tell a lot of work went in to making the lighting as realistic as possible, even without a reference, and it's stunning! thanks for answering my comment btw
