Description

So this takes place after Ariel was captured by Prince Eric and his crew and after she has been brought to the royal castle and has been trapped there for a couple weeks.

Under the line is the story~

~The prince carefully observed the green creature in the royal bath. Despite it being able to fit several people at once the bath looked painfully small compared to the large mermaid within. He watched as the green creature curled up under the golden water and winced as it couldn't even fully submerge itself in the shallow pool. He sighed and walked into the room fully making sure to close the door and lock it, he didn't want his mother or the guards coming in and causing a scene like last time.

Eric smiled as the mermaid's ears lifted and it perked up. It uncurled itself and gingerly came closer to where he keeled on the ground next to the pool careful to keep from making any sudden movements.

"Hi Buddy, sorry I'm late I kinda got held up by my Mother she was worried I was spending too much time with you instead of other people." It's head tilted as big ocean blue eyes watched him in interest and made a chirping noise. Eric snorted lightly and his grin grew.

  "Between you and me? You're much better company." The large fish person crawled up closer to it's normal spot whenever he visited. It's head lifted out of the water and webbed hands keeping it there at the edge of the pool. He took a moment to marvel at it's shimmering scales and pulling out his journal he made sure to note it in the rapidly filling pages alongside all of his other observations of the mermaid.

   He quickly fell into the normal routine of him writing down everything new he noticed of the green mermaid and it watching his every move with keen interest. At some point the large sea creature leaned closer to get a better look at his journal and Eric felt like his heart was in his throat. This was the closest the mermaid had gotten to anyone without trying to bite them. He could feel it's breath dance across his head making his hairs shift. Out of the corner of his eye he saw it's pupils widen as it gently placed one of it's hands to the picture he painted of it the other day.

"Yea, that's you Buddy do you like it? I know I'm not much of an artist but you won't let anyone else even get close and there's no need for them to depict you as vicious." He noticed he was rambling and quickly closed his mouth with a snap. Looking up his gaze locked with deep blue. He shuddered as those two intelligent eyes bore into him like they could look into his soul. He released a breath he didn't know he was holding when it broke their staring contest and looked back down at his painting. He watched as the green creature studied it for a second longer before leaning away and shuffling back from the edge of the pool. It looked down past the water and back up at him.

Curious he looked over the edge "Whatcha got there Buddy?" his eyes widened at what he saw. It was a picture of him scratched into the stone bottom of the pool. He could barely remember to breath and all he could do was clutch onto the edge of the pool to keep from falling in. Buddy his mermaid friend drew him. This wasn't some accidental thing it did, this was deliberate. He knew that it was smart but this, this was more than just smart for an animal.

His head snapped up to stair at the mermaid as a string of chirps, low growls, hums, and clicks came from the sea creature's mouth. He had heard all those sounds before but for the first time he realized that those noises that he and everyone else had passed off as just an animals noises could actually be a language. He startled himself with his own laugh as he leaned back and succumb to a giggle fit.

"How c-could I have been so stupid?" He gasped out between giggles that only grew stronger when the mermaid made a warbling noise that he just now registered as being concern.

  "All this time I've been thinking you couldn't speak when you've been speaking this entire time! How could I not see that you were just speaking another language!" His giggling came to a halt as a horrified feeling crept up his stomach.

  "You've been speaking you probably have a name and here I've been calling you Buddy this entire time. What kind of idiot does that?" He looked at the mermaid and felt worse seeing it's worried expression turned to him. It's ears fallen at half height, tail curled up like a spring, even it's gills were flared open further than normal.

"How could I have not seen this?" He muttered to himself, his hands grasped his hair as he curled in on himself in shame. This entire time he's been treating this person like an animal and it made him feel sick. A low crooning brought him out of his thoughts and he stared into those deep blue worried eyes and took a deep breath to calm down. He couldn't change the past but he would do everything he could to make it right from now on.

Sitting up straight he pressed a hand to his chest and said one word, a look of determination on his face.

"Eric" he stated his name slowly and clearly. He watched as it's head tilted and confusion danced across it's features. Tapping his hand to his chest twice and leaning closer he repeated himself as slowly and clearly as he could manage.

"Er-ic." It's ears perked and eyes widened as it realized what he was doing. For a long moment Eric felt like time stood still as it pointed one clawed finger and taped him in the chest, his heart beating so fast he was afraid his lone companion could hear it.

"Arrrr-ii-k" It sounded out unsure at first but gaining confidence as Eric nodded, excitedly.

"Eric" he repeated and gently took it's much larger hand in his own and pressed it to his chest confidently

"Arr-ik!" it said proudly and the excitement bubbling in Eric's chest threatened to burst out in the form of a laugh. Nodding rapidly he pressed his free hand to it's scaly chest and inclined his head towards it as he'd seen it do a few times. It's tail thrashed slightly and he noticed it's fin on it's head lifted slightly but gravity stubbornly kept it laying flat against it's back and he realized that the mermaid was just as excited as he was.

"Aaarrrr-illll" He was fascinated by the low rumbling that rapidly lifted into a high pitched squeak at the end.

"Aaarrrr-illll" It repeated and he attempted to copy it's sounds.

"Arrrlll?" The large creature nodded rapidly pulling it's hand back as it wriggled in it's excitement back further into the water. Eric couldn't believe it as he tried saying it's name again "Arrrlll!" and again "Arrrlll!" They were communicating! He knew it's name and it knew his and he couldn't stop saying it's name he was just too ecstatic.

  "Arr-ik! Arr-ik!" Hearing the mermaid say his name again made him realize that the creature was just as thrilled as he was and soon they devolved into saying each others names back and forth.

"Arrrlll!" "Arr-ik!" "Arrrlll!" "Arr-ik!" Eric found himself doing a sort of happy dance in his seated position much like the mermaid doing a happy wiggle as they continued to excitedly repeat each others names. He realized they must make quite the site with the crowned prince seated on the floor of all places and dancing goofly while making weird noises and a giant fish monster wriggling in a far too small pool repeating one word over and over again but he couldn't bring himself to care he was too thrilled to be actually communicating with the mermaid!~
