Description After the USSF Razor Star received its Block 3 upgrades in 2035 AD, which included extendable radiators, engine improvements, combat AI, cruise missiles, torpedoes, and weapon/hardware upgrades, its main mission became to patrol all of cislunar space instead of just the Far Side of the Moon. In cislunar patrol, the crew of the USSF Razor Star commonly goes through engagement drills to make sure they are always at the ready. Its orbit would consist of loops around the Moon and the Earth in a figure eight similarly to the Artemis deployments. When engaging an enemy, it would halt its spin and fire bowside. EATA space forces commonly attempted to engage this ship by firing either swarms of kinetic kill vehicles or drone attacks all of which it was successfully shot down with the help of other ships in a carrier strike group, fighters from saber squadrons, or ships in gunship formation minus minor laser burns and multiple rounds side-swiping the hull.

Even though the Razor Star had a good track record in combat, there was one incident that spooked high-ranking NATO and USSF officers. This incident would become known as the "Phantom Ships Engagement". The vessels that the Razor Star engaged had to be either extraterrestrial spacecraft with some kind of mass/inertia dampers, a hidden drill programmed into the ship's computer, or EATA ships with highly advanced radar spoofing technology. The incident was recorded ay the ship's black box.

---

The USSF Razor Star begun its eighth cislunar patrol after its Block 3 upgrades. The ship was departing from the Far Side of the Moon back to Earth orbit when an unexpected visitor started approaching the ship.

"Captain Shepard, we have an inbound unidentified infiltrator approaching our engagement perimeter. 8 minutes to contact." A radar operator announced.

"Can we get an ID on them?" Asked the captain.

"No, sir. They don't seem to have an IFF transponder." Replied a CIC officer.

"Hail them please." The captain ordered.

"Channel open, sir." The CIC comms officer said, the deck's main screen displaying a spectrogram of the radio channel.

"Unidentified ship, this is Captain Jason Shepard of the USSF Razor Star. This is your only warning! Turn back now or you will be engaged." Demanded the captain.

Silence.

"No response, captain." Said the comms officer.

"Alert 2. Increased readiness. Continuing tracking the ship. See if we can get a visual from our telescope." The captain said.

"Aye, sir."

On radar, the ship split into multiple ships. The CIC radar operators were baffled. To them, this was likely a carrier vehicle of some kind deploying smaller drones. But something was off. The new ships had the exact same radar cross section as the first ship, meaning that it was either one ship morphing into multiple ships, or it was multiple ships hiding in one ship's radar shadow like how multiple cyclists draft behind each other to reduce air drag.

"Multiple contacts detected! There are 8 ships inbound." Announced the radar operator.

"Is there hostile intent?" Asked the captain.

"Combat AI predicts so. They haven't deployed any missiles or torpedoes, but they are still inbound. Sounding master caution." Said a CIC operator.

"I warned them. Arm fire group A. Alert 1. Sound general quarters. All crew to battlestations. Prepare to engage." The captain ordered.

The lighting in the ship turned red while an alarm sounded. All of the crew stopped what they were doing and jogged to their lockers to put on a pressure suit. As part of Rules of Engagement in space, USSF personnel are required to wear pressure suits during combat in case there is a massive decompression from a projectile impact or laser ablation of the hull.

"Fire torpedoes." Ordered the captain.

"Aye, sir. Firing torps." Said a torpedo fly-by-wire pilot.

A loud mechanical noise was heard throughout the ship. The launch bays of the ship opened and one torpedo after another floated out parallel to the ship and begun adjusting their orientation. Then one by one, each of them accelerated toward their target.

The main screen showed a total of 8 torpedoes heading toward one ship each. The crew had their hopes high as each of the torpedoes had countermeasures they would deploy before being intercepted by point-defenses in order to confuse them.

"Torpedoes are away. We have a radar lock on all ships." Announced a CIC operator.

"What are they doing?" Asked the captain.

The ships just stopped. It was almost as if they wanted the torpedoes to impact them. As the torpedoes approached the unidentified ships, the sensors on the torpedoes reported no CIWS fire or laser ablation.

"Sir, we have impact." The torpedo fly-by-wire pilot said.

"Did we hit them?"

"I don't think so. We haven't detected any nuclear flashes." A CIC operator said.

"Fire the KKV's." He ordered.

"Firing KKV's." The missile fly-by-wire pilot said.

The ship's vertical launch systems opened up and 16 kinetic kill vehicles in total floated away horizontally to the ship and accelerated to the ships after orientating themselves.

"KKV's away." The pilot said.

Two KKV's were fired at each ship. These KKV's would open and fire ball-bearings to ensure they would turn any ship into Swiss cheese. However, like the torpedoes, nothing happened.

"What happened?" Asked the captain.

"Sir, they appear to have no effect on the bandits. Either they are disabling them or lasing them without us detecting it. The ships are heading toward us again." The sensor operator said.

"Enough of this! Bring up fire groups B and C." Ordered the captain.

"Aye, sir. Diverting power to the Blitzers." Said the railgun gunner.

"Arming the Blazer." Announced the main laser gunner.

A droning sound was heard in the crew compartment as the railguns turned and aimed at the enemy ships. They each began firing green-tracer sabots in a gatling-gun pattern as the ship's main laser attempted to pulse-lase each ship with its violet laser.

Then something extraordinary happened. The radar operators saw the ships evading the railgun fire by zigzagging. Given the distance, it was possible to evade railgun fire but would require a constant burning of fuel. But their zigzagging movement was almost instantaneous and at the last second and was faster than the main laser turret's momentum wheels could keep up with.

"Sir, they're evading our fire. Their movements are like nothing I've ever seen. The combat AI is having hard time predicting their movements. They're now 1 minute to contact." The first officer said.

"Bring up fire groups D and E." Ordered Captain Shepard.

"Bringing up the Rasers." A gunner said.

"Powering up the Testudo CIWS's." Another gunner said.

"Engage."

The Rasers' rolling-airframe turned and then began moving erratically as it attempted to get a lock on the enemy ships. Every time the targeting AI and the gunner of each turret had a lock, the enemy ship would dart away faster than the turret could aim at it. The same was for the CIWS turrets as the 30mm fire missed them when they traveled just ahead of the turret's turning speed.

"Sir, we have a visual on the ships." The first officer said.

"Put it on the main screen." Shepard said.

The screen showed an outline of a 302-meter-long rod-shape vessel with golf ball-like appendages protruding from its edges. Its color was jet black and it had a flag insignia that was not from any NATO or EATA country. What baffled the crew the most was that it had no visible propulsion system and no exhaust plume.

"That's a strange looking ship." Shepard said.

"Sir, they're closing in! One is on a collision course with the ship! Master warning is lit!" The radar operator said.

"Brace for impact! Prepare to be boarded!" Captain Shepard shouted over the ship's intercom.

As quickly as the fight started, the fighting ended. The crew, after tensing up for a few minutes, untensed and realized nothing was on their radar screens.

"Where did they go?!" Asked the captain.

"I don't know, sir. There not on radar or visible on our camera feeds." Said a sensor operator.

"Are they jamming us?" The captain asked.

"No, sir. There's no interference with our comms or our sensors." The first officer replied.

Captain Shepard sat back in his chair with his right hand on his forehead.

"What just happened?" He said under his breath.
