Description
Process for the water starters, referenced Shilin's color palette:Edit: Huh, there seems to be some bizarre over-hyped drama going on over me "copying" (lolwut?) Shilin's illustration so I just wanted to clear the air.
I came up with the sketch/composition for the "Pokemon Starters" series of illustrations in my sketchbook long before jumping on DA for wave/surfing references.
As far as referencing goes, I definitely used her color pallet but other than that I can say with confidence that I went about rendering the water/effects as I would have regardless. Hell, you can tell just by looking at the brush strokes.
Shilin and I haven't exchanged a word, I put this up when someone asked if I had used her work as reference. I don't post every image I take color palettes from, sorry if this offends some of you?

I don't see a problem using color palettes.. I'm not sure why people are over reacting.
Thank you for sharing this process! This truly is an amazing piece
I hope to one day advance my talents to this point!

Can you describe what you did between steps 3 & 4? I'm really curious how you move from such cleanliness to the more realistic feel.

He painted over the lineart, apparently. And blended the colors before adding the final details.
Awesome job, by the way Kuroi-Tsuki!

what exactly did you do to get from step 3 to 4? And also 4 to 5? I know how to do the first 3 easily I just don't know what to do with the others.

AriaDragon In reply to Dutafue [2012-01-17 17:28:43 +0000 UTC]
From what I see, from 3 to 4 he used the original cel shading as a base for the shadows, added a few water trails to the wave and removed the lineart. After that he added highlights and the water splashes in the foreground.

I actually found out that companies DO sort of "own" their own color, in that if you're using red for something commercial-like... you can't use Coca Cola's red, or Pepsi's red ...
D: It's actually really weird

plastikmaniac In reply to PugCrumbs [2011-05-08 03:22:40 +0000 UTC]
I think it's asinine to lay claim on a hue [wavelength of color] as belonging to anyone. They didn't create, discover, or invent it.
Of course, to keep a company's branding "pure", they have to specify their official colors to represent their logo, etc. β but saying that nobody else can officially use that exact color in their logo or branding defies common sense.
At least there's millions of distinct colors to go around.

PugCrumbs In reply to plastikmaniac [2011-05-08 04:10:58 +0000 UTC]
I guess it just makes for a better consistency to have a distinct color in the long run. I just don't get the part about actually needing to "own" it to use it... Not that it matters because, like you said, color is virtually endless.

Silverdragon892003 In reply to PugCrumbs [2012-01-17 02:19:18 +0000 UTC]
Funny thing is, they "own" the name of the color, not the hue itself. You can use the same hue and just rename it any thing you want. At least that's the understanding I got from my professor. ^-^

yeah actually i knew that xD mcdonalds owns their red too.
but you cant copyright colors within an art piece which is what i meant

I wouldn't really care what anyone says. The piece is absolutely beautiful and completely unique. It's not like only one wave picture has been drawn since the dawn of time. Both pictures are unique but also share awesome similarities.
This piece is truly your own and EVERY artist takes inspiration from somewhere.
Thank you for putting the pic up in stages. As someone who has been out of the art loop for a while and just getting back into it, it's nice to see the construction process from a professional!

I think it's stupid that people think that you copied Shilin's artwork. I've put the two artworks next to eachother and looked at the wave. The lines in the water and the splashes are very different, it's your style for sure. I also believe that learning from other artworks is no problem, as long as you credit them, which you did. Btw I learned alot from this process and I love your PokΓ©mon drawings, keep it up!

Wow, how freakin retarded. People are seriously going to start claiming color palettes now? So if I drew a freakin wave it'd be plagarizing this chick? That's really lame. You're waves don't even look the same and you are drawing a completely different subject. It's ridiculous people are getting so damn technical over someone else's art. Who the fuck cares? You made a great painting and they should just shut up and admire.

So... Quick question.
You said in her journal entree about this (which was literally just a picture of her commission from Adobe and the end product of this) that you did in fact use her as a reference, but here it doesn't really say that. "...I definitely used her color pallet..." can be interpreted many ways, and from here I'm getting it was just a coincidence.
Not picking a fight, but to be honest when you put the two pictures side to side it really does look like you stole the concept and general style from the commission. I just want to get your side of this before I try to find out from Shilin.
