Description Process for the water starters, referenced Shilin's color palette:

Edit: Huh, there seems to be some bizarre over-hyped drama going on over me "copying" (lolwut?) Shilin's illustration so I just wanted to clear the air.

I came up with the sketch/composition for the "Pokemon Starters" series of illustrations in my sketchbook long before jumping on DA for wave/surfing references.

As far as referencing goes, I definitely used her color pallet but other than that I can say with confidence that I went about rendering the water/effects as I would have regardless. Hell, you can tell just by looking at the brush strokes.

Shilin and I haven't exchanged a word, I put this up when someone asked if I had used her work as reference. I don't post every image I take color palettes from, sorry if this offends some of you?

Good so, this is awesome. And about copying, I just compared the pictures and the waves are diffrent (diffrent direction), and the water has other style, also, in your pic, the sun is higher, and no one says you can't inspire yourself (if you did) ^^

Wow. All of this is incredible, and completely your own work, as proven. OF COURSE there are similarities. THERES A GIANT WAVE. But you know what? you put the time and effort into all of this, and it is an incredible piece, and you should be proud.

Problem is, composition, position and obviously colors are identical, so is hard to decide if this is a based work or a copy work. It looks more like the second one, I'll say.

I love seeing the process of how an amazing piece comes together!
I MIGHT be able to get to step 3, if I ignored the water, lol...

People have issues with you using the same color palette as someone else?
Your drawing looks nothing like hers beyond both having a wave, surfing, and a crocodile like thing, and those things are done in a very different style!

Saw a few people commenting on how your brushwork was a "poor rip-off" of hers, actually. And yes, you're most likely getting annoyed looks in the least because they find it offending you didn't post her work as reference.

She posted the two pictures side-by-side on her journal, not much else. Some people got their panties in a knot about it, but I just shrugged. There are only so many ways you can draw detailed waves, right? Just because yours came after hers doesn't mean that you ripped hers.

People need to be a bit more chill about it.

This, for some reason, over other step by steps I've see really does a great job of illustrating what varying levels of coloration do for a piece. Flat color, 'cell-shading', then the levels of contrast created upon the addition of shadows, and then finally what happens when you add highlights and textures to really make it pop. I think it may be that each of the figures is at an equal step of development.

Great work!

I like that you acknowledge you are a beginner, which simply implies that you aren't in a stage where you've accepted defeat before starting... (I googled neophyte, and sound myself impressed).

You just need a decent graphics tablet and a knowledge of how light falls.

You don't need a tablet. It can be done with a mouse (I've seen it done). I also understand how light falls. There's the whole "bringing vision to fruition" thing I have problems with.
