This was made for the Challenge Yourself contest based on a prompt from Tokyo Moonlight. A big thanks to all the volunteers who put this together!

I was assigned to draw a realistic horse in pencil, with smoke rising from the chimney. This is my second attempt at it, not counting the studies and thumbnails. Architecture is not what I normally draw, because I have a fear of straight lines, symmetry, and prospective drawing. After several practices with reference pictures, I finally felt satisfied.

I chose to draw a cabin to add a degree of wildness and roughness. I loved drawing the smoke in pencil, and added other rough, smoky details on the background to follow the prompt while still enjoying my loose, imprecise style. Because of how small the house is on the page, I didn't add as much detail as I otherwise might have. I can't say I nailed the shading either, but considering how much I hate lighting, it is still an improvement.

It was a good challenge, that forced me to practice some of the technical skills I don't like but was a lot of fun in the end!

I used a regular #2 pencil, a black colored pencil, and a charcoal pencil.
