Description HRE vs Byzantine – a battle of the Roman successors!

There was always a lot of tension between these two in regards to the title of 'Rome'. Byzantine was the obvious choice by way of culture and society, but as he did not possess the city of Rome, many did not see him as a true 'successor', instead referring to him as the "Empire of the Greeks". This wasn't disputed so much by his allies in the East, who would continue to call him Rome. The Holy Roman Empire, meanwhile, was obliged to add "Holy" to his name to avoid any nasty complications. Even the title of 'Emperor' caused some dispute, and the tensions between these two sides would run on for many years, worsened by the Great Schism. Some held hopes that one day the empires could be united, alas, it was not to be.

Obviously this Byzantine is an OC – even with volume 3, there's still no confirmation on who they are. In this case, he is Rome and ancient Greece's son, placed in charge of the Eastern part of the Roman Empire towards the end of his father’s life. He is shrewd and serious, preferring to settle his disputes with words rather than by arms. Regardless, he is very strong in battle, having a number of tricks up his sleeve. He is deeply religious, and has a great appreciation for art. A master manipulator, he is also known to throw money at his problems rather than deal with them using force.

Not sure how accurate Byzantine's footwear is here (using medieval art for reference), but hopefully nothing is too out of place

Ladies and Gentlemen! In this corner represnting the HRE, Otto (named after the first HR emperor and a common name in the HRE nobility) and in the other corner representing the Byzantine Empire, Constantine (the most common name in Byzantine nobility, and also the inspiration for the Empire's capitol,[Constantinople=Constantine's City]). Let the Battle for Rome begin!

I know that it's ur OC, but isn't Byzantine supposed to be Byzantium?

R-ninja In reply to fujikawaii10346 [2010-12-12 10:55:15 +0000 UTC]

In what sense? Byzantium was the original name of the city of Constantinople - the capital of the Byzantine Empire. It was renamed when the Roman Empire was divided into East and West.

*=/ Thinking face...* Idk, haha! I was kind of thinking that the nations were named after their actual, physical geographical place on the map.
i.e - Byzantium was the center of the Byzantine Empire (That was hard to type out...) so... Byzantium? Personally, I don't remember where my train of thought was going that day... And my arms are tired now... *Waits to read reply*

While it looks like HRE doesn't stand a chance, things didn't exactly turn out like the curb-stomp battle it seems in this picture, or at least if I got my history right. Turkey defeats Byzantine in the 15th Century, while HRE dies at around the 18th (or did he?).

Since Byzantine is Grandpa Rome's son, something about Chibitalia royally screwing Turkey seems to hint that it was an act of unstoppable rage at killing a family member.

I love your concept art of Byzantine and the way how you actually drew this. It's so hilarious and yet I SO see this happening!!

You know how this could be even funnier than it already is? If Byzantine fathered Veneziano and Romano before the Empire was divided and HRE is really bickering endlessly with his beloved's dad. XD

It does sound a little snappy to be honest, but i do that all the time and often regret it later... but sometimes i don't...

Anyway, sorry if i seemed to be trying to talk down to you... i kinda felt that you were doing the same thing to me in the beginning.... also i just get a lot of people who are entirely ignorant of ancient history.... a surprising number of people I'm acquainted with wouldn't even know what the Byzantine Empire is... though i didn't know that you already knew those things either...

No you didn't say Byzantium was used back then, i was trying to use that to back up my claim that the Russian Tsars also had a semi-valid claim to the title of "Rome". Also, yes Charlemange was considered something of a father to it, i never denied that. it just seemed to me like you were considering him to be a german Holy Roman Emperor which isn't true.

So... yeah... sorry i kinda caused an argument here, i really didn't mean to but also felt i had to defend my points... again, your pictures are pretty damn awesome, as are your concepts behind them. I really enjoy the ancients here but perhaps would suggest you also do some medieval ones some time too? (Yes, i know the HRE and Byzantium were more or less medieval... but others too... like Mongolia maybe?)

R-ninja In reply to Flamefang-of-Arnor [2010-10-28 17:38:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, sorry again for that. Really not a good day. I find I usually go overboard in explanations when questioned or challenged. I in no way meant to speak down to you (though continuing the discussion, I still think I can make a case for Charlemagne being Germanic seeing as the Franks were just that. Granted with heavy Latin influences).

Putting all this behind us, thank you, I'm glad you like my OCs. As for medieval characters, I have also done a Kievan Rus'. I'm already fond of a friend's Mongolia OC, and I was considering doing a Hidekaz style chibi of him at some point in the near future.

Awesome! I think the best representation of Byzantium i've seen anywhere! I also love what you did with the eagles in the background. But don't forget, Charlemagne, the Tsars, and the Ottoman Empire all claimed to be the successors to Rome as well.

R-ninja In reply to Flamefang-of-Arnor [2010-10-22 13:51:47 +0000 UTC]

I would have thought Charlemagne counted as "Holy Roman Empire" considering he's usually thought to be the first of their emperors :'|a As for the Tsars - if you're referring to the Russian notion of Moscow being the "Third Rome", that was actually in succession to Byzantine rather than the original Western Empire (due to all that Eastern Orthodoxy business).

Glad you like the pic, though

Flamefang-of-Arnor In reply to R-ninja [2010-10-26 21:20:13 +0000 UTC]

Charlemagne ruled a different Holy Roman Empire usually referred now to the Carolingian Empire, Frankish Empire or the Carolingian Dynasty. They were based in France as opposed to the later Holy Roman Empire which at first consisted only of a group of German principalities. As for the Tsars: Well the name "Byzantine Empire" is one coined primarily by historians, both the citizens of the Empire, and the majority of its neighbors either called it Eastern Rome or just Rome. So when the Tsars claimed this they often felt that they were still succeeding the original Roman Empire in many ways.

I understand why you used these two, and i'm not telling you you should stick the other "Roman Empires" in there. There was far more of a rivalry between the Germanic Holy Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire than the others.

Not feeling too great, so apologies in advance if this sounds snappy (it just seems that you're bringing up things I am already aware of as though I am ignorant):

Firstly - well aware of the naming issues, as you may note from the artist's description (at no point have I said Byzantine was used back then). Secondly - Yes, Charlemagne was the ruler of the Carolingian Empire, but he is still considered a 'father' of sorts to the Holy Roman Empire proper which succeeded it. As for your point on the Tsars - again, as said in the artist's description, the nations to the East clearly though of the Byzantine empire as the direct successor to the original western empire (so yes, they would have considered themselves a successor that way, but third in the line rather than directly).
