Description
Still waiting for word back on Byzantine from Hidekaz. I need a straight answer out of that man, goddammit. Obviously as I've said before, things are pretty up in the air about how Byzantine fits in Hetalia wise. In the unofficial (and god awful) independent drama cd he supposedly scripted, they're mentionned as being Mama Greece. But then he later goes on to describe her as Ancient Greece, and in the most recent profiles , he writes up Mama Greece then mentions a Byzantine under Magyar's profile like they were two completely separate characters. SO WHO KNOWS.I hope he actually answers my email because it's driving me nuts.
Anyhoo, in the meantime I thought I'd do a neater version of my Byzantine design. Not sure if it can count as an OC as they've been mentionned in canon, but lets just say it is. In this case, he's the oldest son of Rome and Mama Greece. He was sent at a young age when his father was beginning to feel a sense of mortality to deal with administration in the eastern part of the empire. He's not an overly cheerful boy, deeply religious, tenacious and shrewd in both business and politics. He does what he can to keep himself going, especially after his father fell. He holds memory of both his parents in high regard, continuing his father's legacy as long as possible whilst treasuring the memory of his mother. When he noticed his younger sibling was beginning to forget her, he started speaking Greek instead of Latin in her memory. He was eventually killed by the Ottoman Empire.
Half tempted to do another pseudo-essay on this guy, but if Hidekaz comes back and has completely different ideas, then it'd all have been kind of pointless pff. Either way, this is pretty much how I see the "Second Rome".

Supposedly, Byzantium is female in the one time they are mentioned. But I love this idea the best! I might use this one! I love the design, it is like a mix of Greece and Rome, which is perfect. Though he kinda reminds me of Lithuania for some reason... I blame the long, brown, luxurious hair.Β

I am taking ALL of your writings as headcanon. Because it's pretty brilliant (but I just haven't studied Ancient European history at all.) Is that okay? This is canon now.Β

Possible it's two characters in a subtile way as I was told by history fans of this particuliar era and region that the 'byzantines' prefered soon after christianisation, the separation of the empire in two parts and all to be refered as 'Romanois' - romans in medieval greek (I believe). As for them, the word Hellenes may be tied to paganism days. Or something... Complex relation to their past, it must have been.
I or others may have said it before, sorry...

Modern Greece more like it (and some states are related as 'uncles' probably like Bulgarians)

Lombard kingdom in a way, technically - the first 'Kingdom of Italy'.
Or Western Roman Empire, who died earlier.

In theory, the Imperial houses of Germany, the Normands, the House of Savoy may have claimed some vague links to the former 'Kingdom of Italy', but not sure

It is the eastern Roman Empire. When Rome's economy was falling, the eastern side isolates themselves from the west, forming the Byzantine empire which thrived for over a hundred of years after the west fell. The language there was Greek, but the tourists and traders spoke in many different languages. The empire's capital was Constantinople. That would probably explain the curl on her hair. I see her like Rome's little sister.Β

I've always thought of Byzantine as Grandpa Rome's son or something (or daughter... I've always seen Byzantine as a girl too ^^). Considering it was the "second Roman Empire" as I've heard people say, it would kinda make sense.

I've read in a few different places that Mama Greece later became this (dude/chick) and that Turkey killed them, taking Greece under his rule and raising him. IDK it's just what I've heard around, and I fail at history anyway... But if this (dude/chick) was one of Greece's parents (Or even older sibling) and Turkey killed them, it'd really explain Greece's hate towards Turkey.

Love this~ Can I borrow your Byzantine OC? My class is so much into Hetalia because I influenced or encouraged my history teacher to watch the anime (because its history) and I want to portray the birth, legacy and fall of the Byzantine Empire (just want to clarify that I only THINK that Byzantine is like Rome's son... It's just my opinion though...)

For the record, The Byzantine Empire and the Roman Empire are historically the exact same entity. The term "Byzantine Empire" was coined a while after the fall, during it's time it was referred to as the "Roman Empire" by it's inhabitants and some of it's enemies, and the "Empire of the Greeks" by western europe. In reality it was just a continuation of the Eastern Roman Empire (You could of course say Western Roman Empire and Eastern Roman Empire are different characters that are both children of Roman Empire).
But lolactuallylisteningtohistory

He seems to say they're both. My solution is that Mama Greece and Greece were sort of running the Byzantine Empire together (since Turkey apparently knew her) and since she was good at handling things BB!Greece didn't grow up too fast.

Your Byzantine looks amazing! Whenever I consider him I always imagine him as one of two kids born as twins (not appearance wise). He and another boy were the result between Rome (I call him Romulus) and Mama Greece (Athena), the first (also named Romulus) would become the embodiment of Italia and the Western Empire, he would go on to father the Italies and would later become the Western Roman Empire after the unified empire split, meanwhile Byzantine (Constantine) would start off as the embodiment of the Macedonian Province, later the East and finally the Byzantine Empire.
