Description
I have said in the past I don't like making characters out of individual tribes in the very ancient days (mainly because I just don't think Hetalia history could work like that), but the Aestii are a fairly important exception. They are mentioned in Germania by Tactius, and noted as being distinctly not Germanic – located on the very edge of the region. Moreover, they are historically seen as the ancestors of the Baltics (at first occupying the area that went on to become Lithuania and Prussia). This is the design I did for a friend's Aestii OC.
Living by the sea, Aestii enjoyed a simple life of fishing, wandering, and talking to trees. One day, unavoidable as it was, Rome turned up. Whilst thinking Aestii a little strange, he was quickly taken by his beauty and the abundance of pretty rock like bits found on his shores. Aestii didn't quite understand why he was so interested in these bits. They tended to wash up with the seaweed and other junk from the sea. Rome, none the less, was enthusiastic in trading for them – this was because they turned out to be amber, something which became very fashionable back in the empire (a small piece could often fetch a higher price than a healthy slave). Thus Aestii started gathering more of these pieces and using them in trade, still not entirely sure why they were so valuable.
It wasn't until a number of years later that something a little more unexpected washed up.
Whilst picking amber from the beach, he found Scandinavia half drowned and unconscious, and somehow managed to fall instantly in love him (despite Scandinavia being bedraggled, covered in seaweed, and near dead).Their relationship didn't get off to the best start, with Aestii's immediate request for marriage leaving Scandinavia somewhat overwhelmed (and scared), and the latter's interest in Rome preventing any possibility for anything other than friendship. But over time, their relationship did warm, tentatively coming to resemble something like a romance.
Alas, it did not have a happy ending. Scandinavia's move to become Varangian Rus' and the wild child phase which came with it left Aestii wondering where his 'husband' had gone. After waiting for many years, he decided to wander away, moving further and further until he vanished, never to be seen again.
Aestii is, of course, a guy. However, his religion holds the Mother Goddess in high regard. He doesn't mind at all being mistaken for a girl, and happily refers to himself as Scandinavia's wife (though Scandinavia really doesn't know what to make of this). He cares deeply for his 'husband' and family, with his children all being incredibly important to him. The first two, Lithuania and Prussia, were followed by Estonia and Latvia – both of which he believes to be a result of his relationship with Scandinavia (again, something Scandinavia really doesn't know how to take). Personality wise, he is more or less an ancient hippie. He is soft spoken, easily distracted, rambles in long, incomprehensible metaphors about nature, and not at all opposed to free love (except, of course, if his 'husband' doesn't approve). He is more than happy to let his hair and clothes serve as residence to small animals, and apparently the ancient ancestors of Prussia's beersparrow nest in his hair. There's a somewhat ethereal, mystic quality to him, which sometimes left many of the neighbouring ancients unsure of his true nature – as such, Rome and others occasionally referred to him as the mythological island of 'Baltia'.
Purple dye was incredibly hard to make back in ancient times, so consider Aestii's cloak a prize won through trade with Rome.
Any questions, will try to answer, etc.
Possible portraits left to do include Grandmother Celt, Great Grandmother Anatolia, and the three Turk siblings (Magyar, Khazar and Pecheneg). I must also get around to writing up my headcanon on Prussia's origins, seeing as this may have raised a fair few questions.

I know right?! I was thinking that Prussia has such a lovely mother, but then it says "guy" and I'm like, "...That's a man?? "
I also had the same reaction for Gaul, I thought Gaul was a man, but in fact is a woman...
Also just proves another point that some men make better women. lol

Hey, I was wondering why you placed Prussia in the Baltic culture group since it was a Germanic state. I think you might be talking about Old Prussia, which was a country filled with Baltic tribes. It was eventually taken over by the Teutonic Order through a series of bloody wars, and then they began to forcefully change the culture by kicking out the Old Prussians and inviting Christian Europeans to live there.

You just gave me a headcanon that Prussia IS Baltia and Scandinavia's child but with all the battles, lost his memory of everything but basic things, was taken in buy his uncle Germania and raised to believe that Germania was his father.

I love you designs for all the ancients, and I want to cosplay as Aestii and Gaul. I'm trying to find clothing that I could use for Aestii online, and I found something for the dark brown under-dress, but I can't find anything for the lighter brown over-dress. Any suggestions?

I can see that Aestii has Gilbert's eyes and Tori's hair colour so it may be true that Aestii is the ''mother'' of those two, but Latvia and Estonia must have taken after their ''father'' Scandinavia 'cuz he has very light hair,Latvia's eyes and attitude
I'm Lithuanian and I'm really happy that our ancient is sooo beautiful.

Ah, good character and I've seen you've done the research, but you've missed out on some critical things. I'm not completely sure about of the facts that you stated above, but there are some character flaws... I'm a Latvian who's been into where I come from for some time so I've done quite a lot of research.
You've got the whole "Mother earth" things right, but initially the Baltics worshiped many gods, primarily the great three. Dievs, who is the almighty spirit and basically translates into god. Normally represented by an old and wise man. Mara, who is basically mother earth. And Laima, the spirit of luck. She's female as well.
The timeline you have there is also a bit off. You see, most eastern and even some northern European tribes can me traced back to the Baltic tribes. They include the multiple gallian tribes, Yotvingians and even the prussian tribes. Now, it's hard to date but there is concrete proof to the fact that these tribes where some of the first. They are REALLY old. Tacticus and a few other scholars wrote about these tribes, but described them wrong. Most of the scholars hadn't ever even been that far up north so they could not get a very good description. Basically, if you want to sum up Aestii the best, he is probably apart of the Baltic tribes.
Furthermore, genetically, Baltic people have a specific genome in their code called WB. This genome gives the Baltic people blond hair and blue eyes. A key factor to tracing the Baltic tribes is that gene.
And finally, right now the Baltic "purity" level or whatever you want to call it (kind of like the who came first or who is the most like so and so) is centered around Latvia and the three Baltic tribes. Everyone else is either a different country, have been mixed up with the Slavic and so on or have been eradicated. We've been enslaved a lot and we're really just simple farmers, but right now from what I can tell Latvia is the center of it. I didn't really come first but still.
Anyway, I love the idea and I just wanted to clarify some things. This is basically my ancestors past and I would like someone to get it right for once. I've been annoyed for a while because I've seen Germania and Ancient Rome but nothing to do with the older tribes. But seriously, I LOVE this!

Veyr nice design, very nice ^^
Although, if he s the parent of the baltics, wouldn't he partially be Prussia's parent? prussia was named ofr a Baltic tribe called the Old Prusse that migrated farther west when the Knights of Teuton took control of them... Just a question, i might be wrong on that *not looking at a history book to confirm fact*

It probably turned out like this.
Aestii: Scandi, do you want to marry me?
Scandi: Well, I like you too Aestii, but this is a bit too... err uncomfortable.
Aestii: Do you want me to help you help you relax?
Scandi: Aestii, this is not what I am trying to say. I am saying that there's someone else in my life.
Aestii: Huh? You have another lover? It is completely alright with me.
Scandi: No it's not that. I just have my heart on someone else.
Aestii, you are a beautiful maiden, and you are so caring, but I love someone else.
Aestii:"chuckling"
Scandi: Hey, what's so funny?
Aestii: Actually, I am a man.
Scandi: "begins tearing up." Please forgive me for my insult, Aestii.
Aestii: You didn't need to apologize, Scandi.

This is Very Beautiful! Best OC characters I've ever seen! Based on the description about him I wonder if Sweden got the "wife" thing from him, seeing how Aestii considers Scandinavia as his "husband" and doesn't mind playing the "wife" role. Wow you've now got me liking the fan-made ScandinaviaXAestii pairing in just one deviation. Thumbs Up!

R-ninja In reply to amazon211 [2011-05-21 14:52:38 +0000 UTC]
The Baltic states are incredibly confusing in general, really.
Strangest of all is Estonia, who really isn't Baltic in any proper sense (linguistically being Finnic and geographically Nordic). Yet somehow the name 'Estonia' derives from 'Aestii'. Maybe Aestii adopted him the same way Scandinavia adopted Finland. Then Livonia is a tricky one - is he a parent? An older brother? Until I can decide, it's hard to say how Latvia came about.
Easier to explain are Lithuania and (Old) Prussia (or the original Prusa). They could have been 'born' at any point as tribal entities, but as 'states' it'd be safer to say they came into their own in the early 1200s.
