Description Still waiting for word back on Byzantine from Hidekaz. I need a straight answer out of that man, goddammit. Obviously as I've said before, things are pretty up in the air about how Byzantine fits in Hetalia wise. In the unofficial (and god awful) independent drama cd he supposedly scripted, they're mentionned as being Mama Greece. But then he later goes on to describe her as Ancient Greece, and in the most recent profiles , he writes up Mama Greece then mentions a Byzantine under Magyar's profile like they were two completely separate characters. SO WHO KNOWS.

I hope he actually answers my email because it's driving me nuts.

Anyhoo, in the meantime I thought I'd do a neater version of my Byzantine design. Not sure if it can count as an OC as they've been mentionned in canon, but lets just say it is. In this case, he's the oldest son of Rome and Mama Greece. He was sent at a young age when his father was beginning to feel a sense of mortality to deal with administration in the eastern part of the empire. He's not an overly cheerful boy, deeply religious, tenacious and shrewd in both business and politics. He does what he can to keep himself going, especially after his father fell. He holds memory of both his parents in high regard, continuing his father's legacy as long as possible whilst treasuring the memory of his mother. When he noticed his younger sibling was beginning to forget her, he started speaking Greek instead of Latin in her memory. He was eventually killed by the Ottoman Empire.

Half tempted to do another pseudo-essay on this guy, but if Hidekaz comes back and has completely different ideas, then it'd all have been kind of pointless pff. Either way, this is pretty much how I see the "Second Rome".

Ah, I see. Thanks for explaining that to me. I'm sadly not the brightest crayon in the box and although I'm a huge history fan I never seem to know enough about any given country no matter how much I read up on it, but I'm especially bad when it comes to the ancient empires. I really wish the Hetalia creator would just come out and say who the parents are!

Don't worry about it, if the passion is there you'll be just fine I do think that being countries, they don't really need to have a 'mother' unless there's a strong cultural crossover, but whilst waiting for Hidekaz to actually confirm or deny, it's fun to think about it.

Cultural crossover? I think this is too big a stretch, but assuming that a Western-Empire character were to be Rome's son and Italy's father, then a character representing the Lombards may fit the mother role as well as a Hungary-like character. It definitely satisfies the whole "cultural crossover" idea.

And who's to say for sure. The Western Empire could just as easily be Rome's daughter.

Yeah, I guess you're right. How the heck are these kids even born? Do they just appear one day out of the blue? Lol. That is kind of interesting to think about.

Make Byzantine the same as Greece, but he forgot.

Just like Ludwig, he's once Shinsei Roma but later on forget it and become Germany.

That will also explain Greece's white hair. (If his hair is white and needs explaining)

I too regard Byzantium as the son of Roman Empire and Ancient Greece and that he wanted to continue his dad's legacy.

I also agree with you on Byzantium's personality traits and that he was a serious person.

For me though, I also see him as adopting Russia, Ukraine and Belarus when they were kids in 988 AD when they converted to his type of Christianity. This of course is part of why Russia and Belarus are mean in war because they saw their father's cruelty towards Bulgar (Bulgaria) when he reconquered him.

Reconquered? Byzantine conquered Bulgaria only once in 1018 A.D. till 1185.

R-ninja In reply to Neo-Byzantium [2010-02-11 22:50:23 +0000 UTC]

An interesting idea, but I can't agree since Ukraine, Russia and Belarus didn't exist back then - just the state of Kievan Rus' (granted it was collection of principalities). It has also been officially stated that Russia was born "around the time the Mongols invaded", which was a few centuries after the christianisation of Kievan Rus'. Moreover, Kievan Rus' wasn't always friendly with Byzantine, and certainly wasn't under it's control.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Neo-Byzantium In reply to R-ninja [2010-02-17 08:59:42 +0000 UTC]

Really? I hadn't been aware that Russia and his siblings didn't exist before the Mongols invaded.

Of course, in episode 1, we see Chibitalia with chibi versions of France, HRE, etc even though they didn't technically exist yet.

Perhaps Russia and his siblings represented parts of Kievan Rus like how Italy represented the core territory of Roman Empire.

In any case, your idea has merit too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

R-ninja In reply to Neo-Byzantium [2010-02-18 21:18:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but bear in mind that even as infants, those pre-nations were still originated from and existed under an 'adult' territory. I genuinely cannot see your idea working from a historical perspective, as Byzantine was not in control of Kievan Rus' and did not own any of its lands. Its influence was limited to some religious aspects and the arts, but much of the culture remained Slavic (and in some very rare cases, Norse).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Neo-Byzantium In reply to R-ninja [2010-06-11 06:40:23 +0000 UTC]

Hence why they're adopted. Still, my idea is that they were adopted in name only with Byzantium only being able to visit them infrequently and eventually, was only able to send letters to them when he became too weak to travel to their holdings.

An alternate idea is that he married Kievan Rus who was a woman so he became their stepdad and THEN, he adopted them. Later on, Mongolia invaded and killed Kievan Rus then Byzantium lost any sembelance of custody over them, how's that?

Ah, looking at my last comment, I might have worded it a little harshly. My main issue was the lack of Kievan Rus' figure, so yeah, that second theory sounds good too...!

No, Bulgaria is Russia's teacher. After all Bulgaria accepted the original alphabet and turned it into the current alphabet, making it simpler and then spreading it among the other Slavic tribes . Also those two nations have a long history of wars and political cat fights. Perfect rival smex material, don't you agree?

Uuu, I need... I know all about Byzantine, and yet, I always forget about it when I'm dealing with Roman stuff.

I usually just end up treating it weird, like... since it was initially just PART of Rome, and then it was split into two...

Eh, Hetalia-wise, that does make it confusing.

But I'll read up on it some more, too, to make it fit with my headcannon. =3= It's important.

Xadren In reply to DracoKing756 [2011-03-04 12:35:29 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you can see it here: [link]
It's a bit incorrect still, because Germania is not supposed to be Italia's parent there, but just an adoptive relative. In any case I though when Rome conquered Ancient Greece, Asia Minor, Middle East and Egypt he gave unity to all these territories and so, mixing his culture with Greece's one, he had a son, East Roman Empire, better known to us as Byzantine Empire (or Byzantium); in fact, Byzantines call themselves "Romàioi" (Romans) and Constantinople "Nèa Ròme" (New Rome). Greece is Byzantium's son while the two Italies, Spain, France, Romania and Egypt are his nephews!

Xadren In reply to DracoKing756 [2011-03-05 10:19:29 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think their relationship is quite difficult; in Hetalia world Greece hates Turkey because he was under Turkey's control for centuries, but in my concept he hates Turkey because he killed his father, Byzantium. There was (and maybe there is even today) a great incomprension between Western Mediterranean country (as Italian States, France, Spain) and Byzantine Empire, because of the language (almost nobody spoke Greek in west during those centuries) and religion (Catholic Church and Ortodox Church), those were the regions why Europe didn't really help Byzantium against the Turks.
Nowday - I think - Greeks are more related to the ancient period of their history, when there were many independent cities-States, than to the Roman and Byzantine period; it's only an opinion I've got reading their comments.
