Description
As I said in the concept sketches, I promised a friend I'd try my hand at making an Iberia at some point (also a few people were asking why he'd been missed off the ancients a-go-go picture, so yeah).Anyway, yes, here we have an Iberia. He's a very outgoing, friendly guy who is quick to pick things up and loves to learn - though he is prone to being easily influenced, not least by Phoenicia, Mama Greece and Gaul. This and his amicable nature meant he was often taken advantage of.
Gaul in the north was very much the big sisterly figure to him, influencing him heavily with her Celtic culture. He also had a close relationship with the stern Carthage who he had met through uncle Phoenicia (who had found him many years before). He helped him with trade and often joined him in battle, with Carthage growing very possessive of his friend.
With Carthage's fall, I am undecided on whether he died by Rome's hands or with Rome's fall (seeing as the province of Hispania initially encompassed the entire peninsula). Of course living past Rome would mean he'd have fun with the Visigoths and Byzantine pulling him back and forth.
In any case, his children went on to become Spain, Portugal, and Andorra.
All the images I've found for Iberian clothing seem to vary from Celtic to Phoenician. That unusual sword he's holding is supposed to be a falcata. They're kind of pretty.
Next up: Britannia.

Hey, I was wondering. Would Spain, Portugal, France, Romania, and England be the children of Rome? Since they were heavily influenced by Rome, and their languages (except for English) are romance languages. Also, I think most of tradition of Celtiberians and the other people originating from the Iberian Peninsula were replaced by Roman traditions and such. The only exception I can really think of would be the Basque who were living in the northern region of the Iberian Peninsula before the Romans came along and took it over.

Maybe adopted for Spain and Portugal, and possibly England since his father might be Germania.

I'm kinda wondering on why Spain and Portugal would be Iberia's sons. All of the Iberian languages are based off of Latin, and the only region that still has a pre-roman influence is the basque region of Spain I think. In my opinion, most of the ancients that Grandpa Rome took over were killed by him. Just want to know your thoughts on this.

good drawing, but there were two main groups iberia the Celtiberians and Basque people, when Rome was at war came, the Basque people joined the Romans and destroyed the Celtiberians and all its culture, together with the roman Basque became the Parents of Spain, another name that was known to basque is Aquitani, and as clothes hang the coat should be black with no decoration

Oh, I think you did a great job!
Thank you for sharing it.
About the critique you have had before, I don't think itβs wrong to call it Iberia since, in spite of the different tribes of the territory at that time, thatβs the name it was mostly called by other countries when you check ancient references. And they actually had a sense of brotherhood when facing a common enemy. And you include some influences like the Celtic and such, which I think is good enough to show the tribal diversity there at that point.
I agree about the mantle, but you include a proper shield an even a falcate! And thatβs way lovely (Did you know that the Iberian falcate was the most feared weapon by the roman troops? they even had to change their shields in order to fight Iberians, and later they adapted the Roman sword to another Iberian type and that's why the Roman sword is called gladius hispanorum).
(some lovely references in this youtube channel : [link] )
Some other trivia you might like (since you seem to like that stuff, but you can jump over it, I donβt want to be too enthusiastic).
-Hispanic people were extremely appreciated as warriors. Not only they were fierce infantry and great horsemen, but also they had a very special warrior vow which was unmatched at that time and that the Romans called βdevotioβ: meaning that once given they would do EVERYTHING for the one who received the vow.
-And also, almost every time the ancient Rome was in serious danger of invasion, you can check that there was find a big amount of Iberians among the attackerβs troops (like with Hannibal or even with Caesar, thatβs why securing Hispania was always a good idea). Thatβs one of the reason Hollywood made Spartacus and the guy of Gladiator to be Hispanic.
-Also, it was the first non-italic territory to become a part of Rome and the first one to recover stability after Romeβs downfall (that lasted until the Islamic invasions) as the Visigoths that went there claimed their identity as Hispanic from very early. For example, thereβs a beautiful love story about the king Ataulf and Gala Placidia (daughter of the emperor Theodosius I) when you can see a clear sense of assented identity there.
-Uhmβ¦ Also that an ancient culture from the south of Hispania, the Tartessus, older than the Iberians, are one of the most likely historical inspirations of Platoβs Atlantis.
Hetalia-wise, I personally don't agree about understanding the colonization as a "killing" because the Hispanic people mostly kept their traditions from before. Iβd rather see it more like a legal unification of the tribes and the logical past of the timeβ¦ So, may I suggest you to keep this lovely lovely character and give him Roman clothing items at some point (to show the change)? I think it is historically more accurate to keep him alive until the Islamic invasion.
In any case, you are doing a gorgeous job with the "papas". I'll keep an eye here.

Wow, thanks for all the great trivia! Some really interesting stuff there, I'm glad you shared it with me
And thank you for your comments on my OC. Something about that other "critique" I've received makes me suspect there may have been ulterior motives. You've done just what I would hope for and actually given me information I can use instead of simply saying "you're wrong because I say so". I am considering changing the mantle to Tyrian purple (possibly a dark red to match Carthage). Also very much agreeing with you on colonisation in a Hetalia context - as I mentionned above, it's not like England killed little America, right?

Spain's history is a ticklish topic lately (political issues), don't let it trouble you.
I don't really think you need to change the mantle, it looks good! Uhm... But purple or red would look awesome too.

I'm not sure how to anwser since it's a bit complex, but it is just like the whole nationalistic stuff, which claims historical issues, rights and compensations even going back to to the Roman times.

To add a bit to this discussion about whether or not Hispania is killed by Rome, in this context Hispania didn't exactly have a centralized government prior to Rome, in the same context as Chibitalia (which represented the Northern half of Italy which was fragmented into little itty bitty states).
In that sense, Hispania would probably be in the same condition as Chibitalia in the sense that he now had to work for "Boss Rome". In hindsight that would make Spain's control over little Romano quite a bit of historical payback. The more you make these things the more karmic some of the events in the actual series seem to be.
BTW, just the thought of England killing little America scares me.

HeroesDaughter In reply to joeabuy1000 [2010-12-06 01:40:09 +0000 UTC]
Indeed, that's why I mentioned the tribes. They have a certain sense of brotherhood but the link was cultural, not political. You have big territories united, like Tartessus, but it didn't included the whole Hispania. I never meant to say it opposite, sorry if I wasn't clear .
