Description
Still waiting for word back on Byzantine from Hidekaz. I need a straight answer out of that man, goddammit. Obviously as I've said before, things are pretty up in the air about how Byzantine fits in Hetalia wise. In the unofficial (and god awful) independent drama cd he supposedly scripted, they're mentionned as being Mama Greece. But then he later goes on to describe her as Ancient Greece, and in the most recent profiles , he writes up Mama Greece then mentions a Byzantine under Magyar's profile like they were two completely separate characters. SO WHO KNOWS.I hope he actually answers my email because it's driving me nuts.
Anyhoo, in the meantime I thought I'd do a neater version of my Byzantine design. Not sure if it can count as an OC as they've been mentionned in canon, but lets just say it is. In this case, he's the oldest son of Rome and Mama Greece. He was sent at a young age when his father was beginning to feel a sense of mortality to deal with administration in the eastern part of the empire. He's not an overly cheerful boy, deeply religious, tenacious and shrewd in both business and politics. He does what he can to keep himself going, especially after his father fell. He holds memory of both his parents in high regard, continuing his father's legacy as long as possible whilst treasuring the memory of his mother. When he noticed his younger sibling was beginning to forget her, he started speaking Greek instead of Latin in her memory. He was eventually killed by the Ottoman Empire.
Half tempted to do another pseudo-essay on this guy, but if Hidekaz comes back and has completely different ideas, then it'd all have been kind of pointless pff. Either way, this is pretty much how I see the "Second Rome".

Ah, Byzantium. The Slav's mean adoptive(?) mother. I've been kind of obssessed with him lately. Anyways, here's my next cluster of questions (sorry if almost all my comments on your awesome OC pictures have questions but... I need to know so I don't mess up stuff when writing.)
First, do you have a human name for him? And also, you have a Magyar OC as well, right? Do you have a name for him as well? Would you mind if I turned him and Byzantium into girls for my AU fic?
Also, Baltia's other creator said it'd be nice if he got involved with the nonviolent stuff of Greenpeace in the fic, so yeah. :3
Hmm... what else? Oh yeah, last year in August or September... I think... I asked for permission to use your Rus' for a fic and a picture (the picture was the only onw I managed to finish before the year ended) and well, I also said I'd give you a link to the fic when it was done so here [link] (it is in my main account). Please tell me if I suck at writing Rus'. I know I messed up some stuff. Anyways.

I generally don't do human names, but I think I decided on either Justin or Justinian for Byzantine. As for Magyar... Akos? He seems like an Akos. It's also probably best to keep them both male (Magyar is, canonically, male anyway according to Hidekaz).
I'll take a look at the fic later, thanks for sharing it

Hm. Okay. I like them. Oh, I keep them male almost all the times, but in this particualr fic, I need a female character to... scold Rus' and yell at him like "WHY DO YOU DO THIS AND THAT?!" I don't know.

But why does it have to be a female character? :'|a

Katyushapitchfork In reply to R-ninja [2011-04-15 22:04:25 +0000 UTC]
Because if it was a male character, it'd be a bit too gayer than I initially wanted the fic to be. Like it's mainly a PruRu fic, and I'm aslo adding Shore Pair to it, and then if I leave a male Byzantium, it'd be like "Too many males, too little females" I just want to equilibrate the characters' genders. But still, even with a female Byzantium, I'd keep her being kind of manly and tomboy = as IC as I can.

Ah. I'm personally opposed to gender role stereotypes, so I tend not to tie certain behaviours a specific sex. It's one of my biggest pet peeves, really.

Well, I'm also opposed to that and it's not about gender stereotypes, really. It's just that in most of my fics I usually have the same number of females and males, so I don't want to make an exception with this one. But well, I'll try to see what can I do to leave a male Byzantium in there.

And how is Herakles Karpousi related to this bloke?

His younger sibling is Greece. (or Herakles if you prefer). I see the Western Roman Empire as his father, and Ancient Greece his mother.

Rome is both their father maybe more, as they separated but Byzance NEVER claimed to be Rome (as in, The Rome) or so until after Rome felt to barbarians. But they, notably, kept calling themselves Romans, scholars say actualy. Byzantine Empire may not have been used ever officialy by them, even when Latin was finaly dropped and they adopted official greek language as base and re-embraced more greek roots.
But yeah, Ancient Greece is kinda his mother - taken by Rome as a wife of sort, and modern Greece is his son. or great son maybe, if you consider Ottoman controled Greek cultural nation as a character of it's own....

In the short ancients profiles he did a few years back. Before that, people just took the older unofficial drama CD he scripted as the official word on it (looks like he could have changed his mind since).

Whoops, sorry! Basically in the drama CD it's said that Mama Greece became Byzantine and was killed by Turkey. But in the profile for Mama G on Hidekaz' blog, there's no mention of her being Byzantine. He then goes on to mention under Magyar's profile that he 'hates Byzantine' (so it seems like Mama G and Byzantine may be two completely different characters now).

Thats not true. Byzantine is only reffered as the title for the eastern Roman Empire which was separated quite a long time ago, creating the gap between catholics and orthodox. Italy historically at least is part of what is called ''western Roman Empire. I'm not sure about the English name but, their history was separated early, though their methods weren't too different...

Was thinking about the idea that the Byzantine Empire being Italy's father (assuming that the West is Grandpa) as well since at it's greatest extent the Byzantines controlled Southern Italy. Whether he be the father or the uncle of the Italies, it was possible that he was a very neglectful guardian (perhaps the typical "too busy with work parent", given the infamy of the Byzantine court) and eventually lost control of Southern Italy.

Okay, makes sense, although I couldn't help but guess if it was the Western Roman Empire because of the whole "forget mother" deal, since the Western Empire lacked any of the cultural height the east had. But for that brother to be modern Greece makes sense, too. His brother's death must've kicked some sense to him.
In any case, where does the Western Empire fit in all this? I've scoured through quite a lot of fan art and so far Western Roman Empire appeared only once.

I think most people assume Rome continues to count as the Western Empire. In the comments for this OC, I mentionned how Byzantine was assigned the east to take some of the pressure off his father. Hidekaz has said Rome was killed by Germania, which also suggests he was the western part.

R-ninja In reply to LostInTheRain [2010-06-08 18:07:10 +0000 UTC]
Not exactly - Byzantine was the Eastern part of the Roman Empire, whilst Italy (or Italies) was part of the West. You can think of him as more of an uncle to them, perhaps. Still, that does leave the question of just who was father to the Italies. Maybe Rome just called himself Grandpa due to his older age? Or maybe they were one and the same, but ended up splitting into two. I've also seen some theories out there that see the Western Empire also being Rome's son. It's pretty interesting to think about.
