Man, Germany is me in this situation. My mom always wants to cross a street in a busy city, like New York, even if the light is red since there are no cars driving by. I'm always like, "But, mom, the light is still red!" She's just like, "Oh, don't worry. Everyone else is doing it anyways."

in England you are supposed to cross when it's green, but sometimes people cross on a red light, if you do so people will call you a twat either internally or to eachother

In China you cross when you feel like it. Sometimes someone will get hurt or there will be like 50 billion car crashes.

This is so true- I live in Germany and I can say from experience you get the dirtiest looks if you even think about crossing while the lights red

Here pedestrians have the right of way no matter what. People really only use the lights if there's lots of traffic, and many intersections don't even HAVE lights for pedestrians--only busy ones, really.

I'm from Italy and I just can't stay there waiting when the street is empty just because there's the red light.Β
Respecting the red light for a pedestrian when there are cars passing it's right and it has a meaning so we'll follow that rule.
Respecting the red light for a pedestrian, considering the red light has the only use of controlling the traffic and preventing pedestrians to be hit by cars, what is the point of following that rule when there are only pedestrians and no cars for hundreds of meters? That's why it's hard in Italy to see pedestrians respecting the red light when there are no cars. xD
I remember one time, I was in Germany, there was this street without a single car on sight, red light, and german people there waiting, I menaged to wait like ten seconds before "Oh well.." and crossing the street anyway xD.

yea its really ... strict ? in Germany with the traffic. ^^ last time i was in spain and there were no traffic lights, just These White stripes on the ground. And the cars were fast as hell, but the surprising Thing was when the People were going to cross the street the cars stopped immediately . i tried it and it worked! ether way, i almost waitedΒ for other People whichΒ were crossing the street so that i can cross to. even the traffic is different with each Country. thats awesome !

Love it!Β I totally get it!Β I'm more like Italy, having grown up in a tourist town.Β But in Germany, if a motorist hits a pedestrian, it's the pedestrian's fault.

Tobi-WanKenobi In reply to PokkitSize [2014-03-01 16:42:58 +0000 UTC]
I am sorry but that isn't correct. As a motorist you ALWAYS have to take the full blame or a part of it in Germany, that's because as a car/truck or bike driver you are the 'stronger'Β road user so you have to be careful. It depends on who caused the accident and if you followed every rule and sign. In most cases both the motorist and the pedestrian take a part of the blame but you can generalize that the car driver is usually the one who has to take care a bit more and therefore usually ends up being the guilty one.
