Description
I think this was one of the first real attempts I made at pushing myself away from preserving a drawing's linework when adding digital color and doing fully rendered artwork. I'd done some experiments a few times before, but this was the first I can recall being very pleased with.Related content

*fave'd* ... Just the energy of her mid-air pose would be compelling enough. Yet the appeal here is also in the wings.
They're not perfectly symmetrical, and I find that appealing, as it's more how they would "really work" and be in play, constantly moving, if such a woman were at all "realistic." (The winged-art collection I'm using for this fave.)
I find the long-ago comment that you report below, of these wings being "inaccurate," entirely absurd. Likewise, the call for a thong. These trousers are far sexier on her.

Great work, though I personally think she should be wearing a thong instead of those pants.

This turned out amazing... So, as I'm still learning myself, what's the secret to being able to drop the linework...?

Well, you have to spend a lot more time defining light and dark, and making the contrast stronger. I found it often helped to be able to mask certain areas, so I could play around with larger brushes for sweeping adjustments, without affecting surrounding areas. I'm a bit of a layer freak. If I think I might want to change something or want to back up my progress to a certain point without losing everything I've done, I'll separate tricky areas onto separate layers.

Glad you like the wings. I was pretty happy with them until I showed this to a pro at a review session and he slammed me for not using photo reference to do the wings more accurately. Oh well.
