Description
This is my end of a trade with . The character is her Purple Qilin - a magnificent critter to work with, and definitely fun to color.Watercolor and Prismacolor pencils.

Yes, that's Prismacolor Premier for the creature and wave-thing.Β Β The specific colors listed below are those in the full 150+ pencil set.
I typically create my gradients with four or more colors.Β I start with the darks first, then work my way up toward the lights.Β For the creature's body, I used indanthrone blue, violet-blue, violet, royal violet, parma violet, cloud blue, and white.
For its tail and mask and other dark bits, I used black cherry, indanthrone blue, dark purple, royal violet, parma violet, and cloud blue.
The waves are violet-blue, ultramarine, blue-violet lake, possibly lake blue as well, Caribbean sea, and cloud blue.
Blending them is something of an acquired skill; I work into the basic gradient, then I'll go back in and punch up the darks and the lights a bit, do some more blending, then hit the highlights one more time.Β I tend to fiddle a lot until I get the balance just the way I want it.

you didn't use white prismacolroed pencil for the highlights? did you?

There may be some very small touches here and there, and I think I may have done some light enhancements in Photoshop.Β There isn't much white otherwise.Β The cloud blue is very nearly white and provided the vast majority of the lightest values and light-to-medium value blending.

I have to give a lot of credit to Mistress-of-Air - her color design for this guy was already amazing, and that made it such a joy to work with. That, and these are some of my favorite colors anyway.

Beautiful tones, wonderful balance between blue and purples working with the composition. I can't work out what the creature is, though, intriguing though it is. It looks like a creature from the old legends.

The creature is one that *Mistress-of-Air made up. She calls it her Purple Qilin. It seems to be related to both the oriental kirin and the gryphon family, but mostly it is a creature right out of her imagination.

It was very tricky to balance the blues and the purples - a little bit of red-purple here, a bit of blue-purple there, back and forth all through the picture. I'm glad that I did not overpower either of the color groups. Thank you!

I doubt it could be any more PURPLE. |D Whole picture has caught The Essence of Purpleness and I still love this dynamic pose. <3 Wonderful, just wonderful.
