My goodness.... How you get such vibrant colors is far beyond me! This is gorgeous!

I especially like the added black design both behind the dragon and emanating from it, echoing the motion of the dragon itself. Really neat addition!

Thank you!

I don't dilute my watercolors very much when I lay in the backgrounds, so that keeps them pretty bright. The Prismacolor pencils are also really vibrant in and of themselves, and I tend to use them in pure states, without a whole lot of shading-with-complementary-colors nonsense.

Amazing work The colours are so vibrant, the gold really glistens and the black lines make it look like an incredibly opulent stained glass picture. Love the details too - his tongue, the feathery doo-dahs, all those scales and dots!

Thanks very much!

I'd originally tried crimson red in that outer outline, but the contrast was all wrong there. Too clashing, even for me. Once I tried a small section with the black, I saw that stained-glass window effect taking shape and decided that the black would work *much* better.

rachaelm5 In reply to ssantara [2011-09-29 12:18:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I'd originally wanted to have a red border around the dragon for the dancing contrast effect against the deep blues and greens of the dragon's scales, but it just didn't balance out right. The blues looked much better against that deep black, and gave me a stained-glass window effect that I liked much better in the end.

I added the lines as an afterthought, because the overall balance was too centralized (like the first Protector is).

You ERASED the Prismas? HOW?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to deathweaselx86 [2011-09-28 05:23:59 +0000 UTC]

On the vellum surface bristol board it's not too difficult to erase Prismas. I use a white plastic eraser (Staedlter brand, I think; it's half gone), and I have to really put my shoulder into it to squish off the Prisma wax. The trick is that the paper or board has to be thick enough to take the abuse, but not too rough-textured so that the eraser can pick up the mess. Dark or intense colors will leave a bit of a "stain" behind, so that will influence the layer of color that goes over it. Originally I had blue-to-green scales and yellow trim; going with black-to-violet scales with turquoise trim covered up the bit of stain that remained.
