Thanks!
I really need to get back to this series one of these days. Skulls are such fun to draw.

Well, it seems as though you worked out the problems with the colour, at least for me it works very well.
Once again, I think the design of the ballons to be eerie, but in the wind rushing through a leafless forrest kind of way.

Eerie is good - that's one of the moods I was trying to achieve. I'll probably do one that's downright morbid one of these days, but I do like the weird, peaceful effect most of all.

Comparitively speaking, morbid is easy compared to eerie.
And I really should read over what I type before pressing send. I'm only now realising that sometimes what I post is incomprehensible.

okay, that is the most awesome thing (and dreamlike) I have pretty much ever seen. O_O *rubs eyes* Man. It also helps that I love skulls and bones and such, so it's just awesome and not creepy. Although I'm not sure how it could be. Eh. Fantastic work though! ^_^

Hey, excellent! I'm glad you like this idea and that it's given you the right impression. I want to avoid "morbid" in this series for the most part, though that's a tricky thing to do when it's skulls. For some reason, people have a really negative impression of skulls... I mean, it's not like everyone doesn't *have* one.

there's a lot of things that seem to have negative connotations that shouldn't. Skulls and bones are one of them, blood is another, and so is nudity. It's always amusing just HOW negative the reactions are at times.

Thanks again!
I definitely have some more ideas for this series. I want to get that green-and-gold scheme to work properly, so I think I'll tackle the skull balloons again fairly soon. Mom also got me a human skull (a plastic one, which will definitely last longer and won't *smell* funny) for my birthday, so now I can work on some new balloon angles.

Wonderful job again Rachael! I do like the aubergine/eggplant color you added to the mountains and the pink tint to the sky. The yellow, gold, and green fits itself more in my mind to a different medium. I can't wait to see youer exhibit in Thayer. Congrats on getting it done!

Thanks very much.
Aubergine...!! What a fantastic word... Had to go look that one up to discover that you'd provided the translation already.
I think I can get the gold-and-green to work if I do another round and use colored pencils to balance out the transitions between colors and forms. Being limited to watercolor set me back on that score. That's okay, though. I have several more ideas for hot-air skulls that I want to try out. Lots of room for experimentation.

They would be unbelievably cool to ride in... And most of the local populace would probably consider it an extremely ill omen, too.
I'm steadily working on figuring out the "right" place to stop on watercolor paintings. If I overwork it, it goes to mud. But I managed to stop just in time, so it looks all right.

Well, not like horror-movie-creepy, just... weird-creepy. You know what I'm saying? Like a scene from one of those dreams that is just plain weird... That must've been one weird dream, know what I'm sayin'? The weirdest dream I ever had would have to be when Harry Potter turned evil and was turning everyone into giant, man-eating arachnids.

You know, this is going to end up sounding very off-kilter and strange, but this piece reminds me of this book that I believe was called 'Our Universe' - it was this very large picture book, I believe from the 70s or 80s, that illustrated all sorts of things about the planets in our galaxy, but in particular our solar system, and what 'alien life' might look like on other planets if it did exist...
And I don't remember which planet it was on, but this reminds me of one particular illustration they did of blimp-like creatures that just floated peacefully through the atmosphere. XD

I know there have been more than one of those type of books. Wayne Barlowe did a couple of those back in the late seventies and early eighties - Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials and Expedition. Expedition, in particular, had some creatures kind of like you described (and which have evidently lodged in my subconscious!). I'll have to see if I can hunt down any other resources - I love those kinds of alien ecology books.

Heh, I'd be able to give you a better fix on what I read but it's at my pop's house, in a city more than six hundred miles away. XD However, seeing as how that's that...
It was still a really fascinating book overall. I rather like the illustrations.
