Description
A character model of Shantae from the "Shantae" series by WayForward that I made as a learning experience. This is essentially the second "official" version of my personal model, hence version 2.0. Numerous enhancements and improvements have been made to this model since its previous iteration. Some of the biggest changes include the ability to now be used in GMod (yay), completely redone vertex-weighting, improved eye rig, more detailed textures, additional props, and an entire set of embedded skeletal animation sequences based on sprite animations within the games. Details on all the enhancements/improvements can be found within the attached README file.Modeled and rigged entirely in Blender. The model's design is most heavily derived/influenced from the game "Shantae and the Pirate's Curse". In-game screenshots and Steam card illustrations were used as a main reference. Contains 5 different skins and multiple facial flexes, both mono and stereo. Also utilizes Source's procedural/"jiggle" bones (has 20 total), and can be used as a ragdoll in GMod. The model's skeleton also follows the conventions of a TF2 bipedal character model, and therefore can be used with both rig_biped_simple and Doc/Revzin's puppet script (steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles… ).
Please feel free to offer any feedback/suggestions or report any bugs you find with these models. I'd sincerely appreciate it as (believe it or not) this will not be the final release. At this juncture I wish to go "whole hog" with this learning experience/personal project, and there will be an enhanced third (and most likely final) release of this model. The major difference between this and the enhanced version will be the addition of alternate costumes from the games, most likely as additional bodygroups.
Special Thanks:
Pte Jack (www.youtube.com/user/PteJack1 , steamcommunity.com/id/PteJack/ ) whose series of YouTube tutorial videos taught me pretty much everything I now know regarding how models behave and are exported in the Source Engine. I cannot thank him enough.

WayForward for making a great game (store.steampowered.com/app/345… , www.humblebundle.com/store/p/s… )
Py-Bun (py-bun.deviantart.com/ , steamcommunity.com/id/pybun/ ), whose QC file for her Papyrus model helped me figure out how stereo flexes are exported and complied.
Mr. Prawn (prawnboy101.deviantart.com/ , steamcommunity.com/id/PrawnBoy/ ), who reached out to me and helped me figure out how to properly implement an eye rig in Source. He's also ported an alternate Shantae ragdoll model on the GMod workshop that you may want to check out.
BeardedDoomGuy (beardeddoomguy.deviantart.com/ , steamcommunity.com/id/Doomx93/ ) for some modeling tips and reminding me of that backer costume from the ½ Genie Hero Kickstarter campaign.
LegoGuy9875 (legoguy9875.deviantart.com/ ), for leaving some constructive feedback on DA, all of which was later implemented to improve this model. Also for beta-testing version 2.0.

Notes:
In order for this model to work within SFM, files and directories must be copied/moved into the game folder maintaining the same file hierarchy as in the downloadable zipped archive.
In order for this model to work within Garry's Mod, you will need to subscribe to Rubat's Extended Spawnmenu script in the Steam GMod Workshop (steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles… ). Then place the files and directories in a custom folder (say named "Shantae") within the "garrysmod\addons\" folder, maintaining the same file hierarchy. The models can then be found and spawned from the "Legacy Addons" section in the spawn menu (Q) when launching GMod. Check the workshop page for additional details.
I did not create the normal map for the hair. This was copied from the files for an EqG model originally modeled by user creatorofpony.deviantart.com/. All other textures were created by me using GIMP.
Known bugs:
Not a bug with the model per se but with SFM. The jiggle/procedural bones will not bake properly when the model is spawned in a current session. Instead of baking the dynamic animations, the process will bake the jiggle bones' default positions. For the baking to properly work, you must save the session after spawning the model, close the current SFM session, and then reopen it. Baking the procedural animations will then work properly now that the model is saved within the SFM session.
Potential plans for updates and future releases:
Bodygroups for alternate costumes (magic mode, pajama, swimsuit). Plus anything new revealed by S:½GH.
Possibly an external phoneme file. I would use MaxOfS2D's video tutorial on the subject (www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHNZgn… ).

Sorry for the very late response; I have been really busy finalizing things. I can certainly make the Blender file available, just not for this particular model. This is the second version of my Shantae model, and I recently uploaded the third version to the SFM and GMod workshops. I want to say this is the final version but…there have been complaints. Feel free to read my recent status update for details (radioactive-dk.deviantart.com/… ).
I'll leave it up to you whether you'd like what I have currently have, or would prefer to wait. Out of curiosity, what did you have in mind to do with the .blend file?

oh it's fine
the model face wise is fine,
i've seen ugly, your model isn't ugly
to convert it for use in mmd,
why? NOT to distribute without permission
personal use, and the fact that i liked the model
the reason i asked for the blend file is when i converted the MDL
file the eye UV was messed up as if the eye texture that came with the model
wasn't the original eye texture

I have; I came across it when Mr. Bozon posted a link to it on Twitter near the end of 2015. It also of course features the model that Mr. Prawn converted to Source, back when it was just meant for Unreal. I'll admit I had already started my modeling project (and made decent progress) by the time Infected Fury's model or the accompanying video surfaced.

Makes me wonder how your models would look like in such games (I mean you already got the animations down), or at least even as playermodels. ...But that's juts me thinking; you already have plenty of work to do already with these models. I hope they go well for ya; I'm sure countless people would love to use this as a complete set when completed. ...Not that I want you to feel pressured about it or anything; I hate giving people such negative reactions because it's usually unintentional.

I'll admit I have thought game development, but I've had very little experience and so little spare time to learn that stuff. Heck, it took well over a year just to learn how to port models into one engine. Maybe things would be different if I weren't employed, but I'm comfortable just doing models at this point.
Also, I am still working on the other models. Progress is slow, but it's still progress. I wish I could give a date, but I have found that it is better not to stress myself over this stuff, especially if it's just a hobby and I haven't been given a deadline. Thanks for being patient!

It makes me wonder why this hasn't been uploaded as an addon to Steam Workshop yet. This is probably the most accurate version of her so far. Sure, it's based mostly off "Pirate's Curse", but maybe there could be some added bodygroups like for a classic Shantae's red outfit (I know you've got those red arm sash things she wore in the first two games) and a bodygrouped neck brace (as she didn't have one in the first two games). Though that's probably just me nitpicking; since I don't even know how to make models myself, I'm probably not entirely eligible to make such suggestions. Also, I saw your update pictures; they look promising (though remember, Risky, and probably the others, is slightly taller than Shantae), and upon completion, that should be all the more reason to have them on Steam Workshop because they'll probably have a higher chance of getting noticed. ...None of this meant to cause any provocative measure; I don't like getting people upset about anything.

The feedback is very much appreciated, not upsetting.
Two main reasons why this isn't on the workshop (yet). First, I wasn't confident enough in my modeling experience and understanding the Blender-to-Source process at the time. To an extent I'm still learning as I go, but I've gained a ton more experience since version 1.0 of this model. I am using DA as a sort of staging area that allows me to share these models publicly and gain some feedback/suggestions from those who are interested before getting on the workshop. Secondly, another user already "beat" me to uploading a Shantae model to the workshop at the time, though just the GMod one, not the SFM one. It's more professional-looking and may be more accurate, but I'd like to think my version has more features and customization. Plus mine was made from scratch with SFM in mind, while the other is a port that while it works fine in GMod, it is less SFM-friendly. If I'm going to crowd the workshop with another Shantae model, it should have enhancements that make it less redundant.
While there are noticeable design differences in Shantae's default outfit from game to game (such as with the harem pants and arm bracers), I don't think they are dissimilar enough to warrant additional body-groups. Separate models sure but pushing the limits of an "all-in-one" Shantae character model. Keep in mind that Source does have a limit on the number of body-group combinations and the number of materials used per model. I actually did hit the maximum of 32 different materials in this version, so I had to use a creative workaround to free up room for a few more for the upcoming version.
I'm glad you brought up the neck brace/collar, or lack thereof. I totally overlooked that when looking through my S:RR screenshots. That can easily be made into its own body-group. I just hope it doesn't push me over Source's limit; even having a simple on/off (binary) body-group still multiplies the number of body-group combinations by two.
I know I didn't include any sort of scale reference in those screenshots in my status update, but I'm way ahead of you on making Risky somewhat (nearly 1 head) taller. I'm not sure what to do with Rotty though; her sprite is slightly taller, but she's also supposed to be younger (at least according to the last time I checked the wiki and disregarding that whole being undead thing). In the end, there won't be any major height difference between those two.
I can't give a deadline because my real-life obligations often get in the way, but hopefully these models will eventually make it into the Steam workshop. Worst case scenario they'll still end up here on DA. Thank you so much for the feedback!

Oh no not at all. Sorry. As I mentioned, real life obligations get in the way, so I can't be at my computer all the time. In fact I had to leave right after posting my previous comment…and I have to leave for work after posting this.
Oh so you know Mr. Prawn? Yeah I'll admit it does seem like a lost opportunity to not enhance the version he had already ported. In my defense, I had started creating the Shantae model as a learning experience when there were no other Source versions publicly available, including Prawn's and BDG's. Infected Fury, the creator of the Shantae model Prawn ported, hadn't even uploaded it to Sketchfab by the time I had already made some progress. I didn't know Mr. Prawn until he contacted me after uploading the first version of my Shantae model, and he asked me to make the pirate-related body-groups for the one he was porting. By that time I understood body-groups, but was still struggling with learning about flexes and rigging the eyes.
So yeah, it is a bit selfish. But this Shantae model has been a sort of passion project and personal learning experience to try to get a character model made from scratch (as opposed to an enhancement or port) into Source. Also (again, a bit selfish), I'm more familiar with SFM than GMod, and the skeleton in Mr. Prawn's model is less than optimal for IK-rigging. IK-rigging and importing animations in SFM is most simple when a TF2-style skeleton is used.
"Equestria Girls", huh? I certainly wasn't aiming for that. If you mean the names of the flexes, pure coincidence. If you mean the art style, well I was just trying to mimic S&tPC's art-style at best as I could using in game screenshots. Both styles' characters have huge eyes, minuscule noses, colored irises, and disproportionately large heads. I don't consider myself to be an artist, so I wouldn't be able to "nail" each art-style used in each game. Personally it's challenging enough to make something 3D out of something that has exclusively been 2D.
I'll admit I'm not a fan of anime, though I'd argue that S&tPC achieves some kind of balance between the S:RR style and full-blown anime style (Hence why I've used the term "animesque"). I chose S&tPC as a reference mainly because it was my favorite of the 2 (now 3) games in the series that I have played; I'm pretty much a PC guy all the way and don't emulate, and thus haven't played the original. Plus I liked the addition of the pirate gear and vest, which provided an opportunity to learn body-groups.
We are in agreement regarding the "Chibi" art-style of S:½GH. Personally not a fan. Plus, I too would prefer the style that actually has the jewel in the tiara and colored irises (the portraits in S:½GH have them, but the sprites just have black pupils). It sounds like we can just blame our issues on WayForward's inability to pick a consistent art-style/character design haha.

(On my phone) I haven't made a tutorial per se (though there are some guides in the Steam workshop), but I listed the instructions on how to do so in the README file within the downloadable zip archive. Those instructions are for SFM though. Not sure how you would do it in GMod. There is the color tool, but that paints every material on a model. So you could paint Shantae entirely green for example, but you wouldn't be able to just paint her outfit green and keep the skin the same color. Perhaps there is a workshop tool that allows you to apply a color one material at a time?

Hmm...truth accepted; the one already one Steam Workshop uploaded by my Steam friend Mister Prawn could be somewhat better-looking than the one you've been working on, but again, lacking in face pose choices compared to yours (Prawn's can't wink, and now that I think of it, that's what she did every time she transformed in Half-Genie Hero, so that facial feature's probably essential. Actually, the face of your version reminds me of the "Equestrian Girls" models too, for some reason). Now it makes me feel you and Prawn could've worked together to make alternate/enhanced versions of that model instead of the ones you've been working on, but that just sounds mean of me to say that. I myself don't even know how to make or import models to gmod anyway; just hexed reskins (meaning, for example I could make a reskinned version of your model, like a red-clothed version without replacing the original altogether). And, on a personal note, I didn't really care for "The Pirate's Curse" artwork designs, but went along with it anyway. My favorite version was of the first two games, though more for "Risky's Revenge", even though my favorite game in the series is the first. And sadly, as much as I don't like the modern designed versions of those characters for "Half-Genie Hero" (it's more kid cartoon anime than the original sexy anime thing. Guess they wanted to make the series more kid-friendly or something), I suppose there should be models based off that game too...and I mean the characters' talk portraits, not the short-stature sprites like the one BeardedDoomGuy uploaded to deviantart. No offence to that guy of course, but she's supposed to be 16, but that recent game made her the others look like they're 10 or something. And for some reason, I really miss that blue-gem tiara...it feels like . Gah, basically, I'm torn between wanting to use a (better) model of her for gmod based off the Half-Genie Hero concept art (not the sprites), regardless that I don't like this change (because with so much that was implemented in that game, it looks like a permanent change). I tried with the Ragdoll Resizer and Advanced Bone Tool with BDG's, but I still feel it lacking... But I guess it's just wishful (yet not really desired) thinking. Besides, you've got plenty on your plate already, as do I with my gmod video animation projects.
...Heh...let me share something with ya: while watching a whole walkthrough of 1/2GH, I was fantasizing about me own Shantae game where the villain was based off Light Magic (because I don't like the concept of Darkness always being evil when it doesn't NEED to be, and vice versa for Light) and she and Risky's shadow fuses together so that they can't move far away from each other, almost like a Donkey Kong Country buddy system but using the shadow to switch between Shantae and Risky and they'd usually (but not always) be together at the same time during a cutsceene. In one level I thought up, it would involve time portals, and they go into them which leads to various parts of the land as it was in Game Boy Color and the character portraits/artwork showing themselves as they were back then, and they'd look at each other, being like, "We used to look like THIS?" That would probably be a good laugh...

Not a whole lot has progressed since then. Holiday season got in the way, my Internet connection has been hampered, and spent a large part of the last two weeks building a brand new super computer. The good news is that Holidays are over, the new desktop computer works, and I'll have a legitimate workstation to finish these models, so hopefully my productivity will be increased as a result. I have to agree with Radioactive-DK; those Shantae character models are definitely worthy of being used by the masses (and those Skullgirls characters for that matter; I like that franchise too), as they seem to have decently high accuracy to the actual...how do I put this...designs(?) of the characters (though I noticed her dancer/magic/princess outfit is lacking the cobra tiara thing). I suppose just the GBC and Toon selves and we'd have a complete set...I mean, we know in the first game she actually wears a red sash instead of the pants with the black portion. And we all know what I mean by her "Toon" self. Personally I really did care for this modern version of her and the rest of the cast, but it looks like, despite all the other decent past designs, this one might be here to stay, and (Radioactive-DK, feel free to stop reading this comment at this point; you already know about the rest) I feel torn to have to settle on using one based off her "Half-Genie Hero" portrait concept art (not the in-game sprites). Point is though, that the models you made of them so far are darn good; both yours and R-DK's, but if I really were to choose, I might go with yours should they ever make it gmod and if/when I'd ever decide to use them in one of my gmod animation videos on YouTube. ...Maybe... But until then, I'll go with R-DK's. No offence, right? I mean, I do like R-DK's too, along with the ones he showed in his model preview pages. ...I don't want to sound like I'd want to criticize on either of you guys' works and hard efforts, but it's also because I hate upsetting anyone, especially when I'd be put in a situation where I'd have to chose one thing over another when both are decently good.

leojones In reply to mrbenio [2017-02-02 04:42:50 +0000 UTC]
The dancer outfit is actually from the Director's Cut version of her second game "Shantae: Risky's Revenge", as it appears in the promotional artwork. The one with the cobra tiara is from her third game "Shantae and the Pirate's Curse", which is similar, but has a different design for the tiara and chest piece (may do that version too at some point, since it's a small edit, similar to how I made her pirate outfit).
I only learned to make models for Gmod very recently, so I've never been in the habit of making models for general use by a wider audience. I made those Skullgirls and Shantae models for three reasons: I think the characters and their designs are cool, I wanted to see what they'd look like in 3D, and I wanted to train myself to make character models (and show people how closely I can match a given style). That's why I don't usually make models of characters that have already been made in 3D (the Splatoon one being the exception), since I already know what they'd look like (and my own version might not be quite as good as the original). Since the models were made just for me and just for one specific render, they're not really optimized and they aren't the least bit user-friendly, since I didn't make them with distribution in mind.
In order for them to be usable in Gmod, I'd have to basically remake them entirely, and since I'm busy with other projects (both personal and commissioned), and since I don't really use Gmod myself, and since there are already other models available, that's veeeery low on my list of priorities.

Just noticed you're the same guy who commented on the SFM workshop thread. Either that or you use the same avatar.
Magic mode, princess, they're mostly the same thing. If referring to the more ornate costume that Shantae wears in magic mode in "Risky's Revenge" (cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/ste… )and in Tan-line Temple in "Pirate's Curse" (cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/ste… ). These two are similar (they use the same sprites), but the illustrations/portraits are slightly different.
As for the animals, I didn't have plans to do so. I'm not saying 'no', it's just that I had already gotten requests (though not all of them direct) to do the alternate costumes, and character models for Risky Boots and Rottytops. Currently I've already made progress on the alternate costumes.
Also keep in mind that I've never played the original "Shantae" (never owned a Nintendo console), so I wouldn't feel incredibly confident doing the spider or harpy forms.

Yes that is me who commented on the SFM workshop thread this avatar was made by a friend of mine. Anyway since spider and harpy forms are returning in Half Genie-Hero I believe it wouldn't be too much of a problem.

Oh. Well as a S:½HG slacker backer, that'll certainly make things more convenient for me. It's certainly doable (monkey and crab should be simple enough), but there are few modeling projects already on my plate at this moment. I probably wouldn't start on them until after I have played through S:½GH. I will certainly keep you posted.
