WARNING: long ass comment here... O_O

This is the 4 installment of my Birth of Space series. Hooray! ^_^ I'm pretty exhausted, both physically and emotionally. You see, my mom passed away last Spring. Halloween was her favorite holiday. So I've been thinking about her lately. Plus, I've been improving in my artwork. I wonder what she would've thought about my work. Alas, she's gone.I can only try not to remember her last days here in this world since they were pretty horrific and heartwrenching.

Anyway, this image is the male perspective of the series. Whereas woman is the bearer of life, man holds the seed of life. They are compliments of each other. This image is a metaphorical representation of ejaculation taking place. The sperm (yes, that's what they are, lol. I gave them a different design though) spill out into the universe, thus creating life.

You can find this series spiritual in terms of humans being directly linked to a God or the universe through the power of creation. The abstract architecture, for example, represents this 'higher being' or the embodiment of the universe (this depends on your view of the world; whether you believe there is a higher order or soemthing else). Seth, on the other hand, is sheltered by this structure and is a direct witness to life, as are all humans when they take the initiative and procreate. In this, humans aren't the passive creatures many would like to believe. We aren't creatures whose lives are solely dependent on God/universe (in other words, our destines aren't determined by God). Rather, the relationship between God/universe is split. God may set the stage but humans are the ones who set the dialogue and actions. We are credited for our own successes and failures in life while God/the universe is credited for how much stage time we have.

In many ways, this series has helped me cope with my loss. This series is all about humans, as well as all lifeforms, being linked to the universe or God. I'd like to think my mom still has a special place in it, even if it's only in the hearts of me and everyone else who was touched by her. There's a lotta details in this series, and it requires a lot of patience from me, especially since I use the mouse, but it's helpful. It forces me into a meditative state. Hopefully, you guys enjoy these images and find a meaning that suits your needs. The thing I love about sci-fi is that it's a spiritual place. You don't need to believe in God to be spiritial. I believe everyone has their own interpretation of life and the particular forces that are beyond our control.

To tell the truth, it was your author's note that got me lol, and now I can see that in your painting, there's that much more to it. It's beautiful. And so deep. ^.^

*sniff* I'm glad you found the note insightful. I know many people tell me to let the image speak for itself. But I also think it's imperative for readers to know the picture's history and story too. Then they can take it from there.

I am so sorry about your mom, I hope she has found peace and happiness
I know exactly what you mean, but in relation to my grandfather (who was more like a father to me anyway). Watching him get weaker and more helpless... until he couldn't even leave his bed or drink... I had to fill spongy sticks with water for him to chew on so that he didn't dehydrate. And then,as I watched, he finally just gave up after reaching out for what I can only imagine was his late wife's hand). It was absolutely devastating (That was the only time in my life that I've ever cried myself to sleep), but I thought "At least they are together now".

So, I hope your mother and yourself are both well, though on different levels of well being.

Anyway, onto the art (I'm sorry that first part took so long)...

This piece is fantastic. I really really like the concept... it is quite unique and one that I believe... although in a slightly less definitive way... Say a man kills himself. He was so absolutely lost in his life that he felt he needed to be dead. And so he made a point of dying. Did God cause so much misery to fall upon this man that it drove him off the Cliffs of Moher? Or was it the man's own doing to amass such tragedy and then lay the responsibility of death upon himself? Hehe, We will never know, but he might

I completely agree with your view on spirituality, by the way

Back to the art:
(Haha, wow, this is getting long, I'm very sorry )

I love this piece. The colours, the details, the positioning, the lighting, the setting, guy's clothes, the newly-designed sperm.... Everything just fits so well and is amazing

Well that concludes my comment... sorry it was so long, I'm sure you will have many more to get through over the course of the day

Thank you for the beautiful words. And yes, I can relate to your experience. My family brought my mom to a hospice after we discovered the brain hemorrage was irreversible. She was diabetic so when we decided for her to go, since she was going through seizures, I literally watched my mom's body break apart. She spat out blood during her seizures and, on several occasions, her bowels came out through her mouth since it had no other place to go to. I don't think I'll ever rid myself of those images. Especially when she last drew her breath. She had basically drowned in all of the clogged up saliva/mucus that built up. Oddly enough, she looked up, as if seeing something there before she finally passed away.

I try hard not to remember those moments since they were pretty horrific. The whole thing last about three days. She didn't who I was, only moving manically in her bed. One time, though, she seemed to recognize my dad and hugged him. Then she mentally slipped away. I think that, above all else, was heartbreaking to me. My mom and I were very close. To see that she didn't recognize me at all was painful.

Yeah, I've been playing with that concept for awhile. It's definitely not a definitive explanation, but it does give accountability to human beings. A man doesn't go miserable because of God. Rather, it is the system he lives him that is accountable. It is the people who look the other way, or treat him like crap that are responsible for his pain. It is the people who refuse to help a mentally sick man that allows the sick man to remain sick. If you look at many suicide case, you’ll see a whole line of human beings that are psychologically or physically responsible for their deaths, either through negligence or irresponsibiltiy. Like my dad’s uncle. He hung himself shortly after prison time, right after his girlfriend left him. I believe humans cause misery to each other. With the exception of the natural disaster, lol. Yet, even then, how you respond to a natural disaster is on you. You can either cry and do nothing. Or pick yourself up like many of the katrina victims. Life’s always filled with challenges. And I think everyone, at one point in our lives, has a reason to kill ourselves. Yet, it’s because of our freewill and the support of others or faith in oneself that determines our actions.

Hah, I love these kinds of topics. I like delving into sci-fi because it's often a neutral area for relgious and non-religous people to talk about stuff like this. I'm of the mind that the fantasy world can teach everyone something new and unique without there having to be a war of conversion.

I'm glad you find the overal piece awesome, btw. Granted, drawing sperm was kinda off the norms. Still they're incredible creatures. Not many people give them their dues. They, themselves, have the power to intiate life's sequence, so they do need to be recognized for their brilliace.

kitsuneko-xenon In reply to RadiusZero [2008-12-13 08:21:22 +0000 UTC]

I'm so very sorry ... your mother's death was far less peaceful than my grandfather's... he simply gave up, not wanting to continue surviving after his life had ended. You see, his wife of fifty-two or so years had just died a few months ago, and he couldn't even do so much as get out of bed. I can't imagine the sadness he must have felt... and then the relief, perhaps when she came and told him it was time to go...
She did that too? Yeah, that is what formulated my current perception of religion. Which is that every religion is absolutely true for the people who believe in it, even after death. For example, a good Christian or Jew will make their way to Heaven, a true Buddhist monk will be reborn into paradise, and so on... It's simply a matter of who you let control what is "beyond" human control... which essentially gives us control over even such things as the afterlife.

I can't even begin to comprehend what that must feel like... I just... can't. I am so sorry that you had to go through that

Ah, I understand what you were saying a little better than I did before, sorry ... and I must say, I completely agree. Gods may put us here, but then they just watch our lives unfold and, at the end when we are returned to them, we are judged based on what we as individuals did over the course of our lives and are segregated accordingly (without the negative connotation on "segregated"). I'm sorry about your uncle, too

Yeah, I love these topics... although lately I've kindof stopped searching for these answers (since at this stage in our consciousness there is really know way to find these answers, at least not definitively), and I've begun searching for answers to something that we can currently study and that is very related to the idea of "god": space. Lately, it's been all about space for me, and I'm convinced the higher consciousness we desire will come from our studies of space... hehe, or maybe this whole Mayan philosophy will play out when we align with Jupiter and the center of the Milky Way in a way that it brings about the beginning of the evolution to this higher consciousness...
Hehe yeah, religious wars and even just hatred based on religion are absolutely ridiculous... and I'm sure the gods frown on these wars... though perhaps not, because I can't say that I know how a god functions...

Yeah, I used to think of sperm and go "Ew, gross little squigglies!" But now I really appreciate what they do for humanity... a selfless journey to find the egg, from which none will return... but when one finds that oh-so elusive egg and fertilizes it, life can begin... perhaps a life that will bring greatness to humanity, or a life that will destroy us... but without those brave little squigglies, we would not even be alive today to find out what these lives they created will bring

For starters, Wow...You did that with a mouse!? You deserve the DD.
Secondly, fantastic piece of sci-fi art, fantastic use of colour and imagery.
Thirdly (and finally, fear not) your words have brought a great comfort to me that someone else out there is feeling like I am at the minute. There is so much truth in what you have said, and its great to hear someone who isn't afraid to express their feelings.

hah, I'm so glad to find this comment waiting for me today. it's been an exhausting week so the news on my DD is jsut the picker-up I need. And this comment especially really warmed my heart.

Yep. I did this with the mouse. XD It's been my friend for five years now, so I'm really used to it. My friend just lended me her tablet, but it's hard for me to get used to it so I plan to practice with it during my X-mas break.

I'm very glad you love my imagery and use of color. And the fact that you appreciate this, despite it being sci-fish, means the worlds to me. It's been an ongoing battle of mines to elevate the sci-fi realm. Most ppl think it's for geeks. But the good stuff is breathtaking and spiritual, which is exactly what I want for my series.

That last part of your comment really touched me. I know it's hard to express yourself, especially to friends. I went to school after my spring break and only *one* hugged me when he found out about my mom's death. Everyone else carried on as if it was business as usual. At first, I was pissed. But then I realized that all of my friends knew what to say. And in many ways, it was good they kept my mind distracted, lest I'd lose myself. I also used to be very angry at how things turned out. But now I realize that being "dead" isn't the end of all things. my mom lives on, as do all the other deceased ppl. They live within us, within our memories. They're part of that special part of us.

This is again a beautiful picture, Seth looks almost tired, but also alert.

Your art astounds me and I really enjoy blowing them up to the full picture and really taking the time to take in the details.

Props to using the mouse, I have a tablet and I can't hope to get my art anywhere near this good.

Sorry to hear for your loss, and although its a long time ago that it happened I hope that you are alright and that the holiday brought happy memories of the times you could spend withy our mom.

I'm sure she would be proud of your art and the way you seem to put your all into your work. Each one seems to have a little more than then last and they are a feast to the eyes.

And yey ont he design of the sperm they look really awesome and if they really looked like that it would be much more fun!! I really like the long one thats wafting around Seth's head!

Sorry for the belated reply, but THANK YOU so much for the lovely comment. Yeah, Seth has this alert and sedate look on his face, don't he?

My friend let me borrow her tablet so hopefully I can exercise with it a little during my break. Using the mouse is cool, but very tedious, especially with the pen tool.

The sperm was fun. It's funny, they're very natural and important to our species. Yet, the mere mention of the word "sperm" seems to be taboo. I think they look cool, though. People shouldn't feel ashamed about talking about these little guys.

Thanks. The holidays are kinda tough sicne this is the first Thanksgiving and X-Mas without my mom. And I'm doing the Thanksgiving dinner for the first time. I'm glad I'm keeping busy since it helps take away the pain. Still, I wish she were here. I hope i can cook the turkey right so she'll be proud of me.

Sperm are funny *and* cute. They're brainless little creatures, for crying out loud. Their only goal is to poke the ball.

Thanks. I'm planning to take a pic of it, whether it turned out okay or not. Cross your fingers that I don't burn the house down. O_O

Although to be fair a friend of mine borrowed mine once and he couldn't get the hang of it at all, but he had a rather strange drawing technique and used really light strokes, he didnt understand that where you put the pen on the tablet thats where it will show on the screen and could never make more than a few squiggles!

!!!! POKE THE BALL !!!! I'm gona remember that one !!

Overactive imaginations are awesome. I wish mines were so dull... However, I daydream a lot. Hell, sometimes I get confused and wonder if my daydream really happened.

I saw the updated version of the Seth pic and practically fangirl squealed. And thanks! I love Seth but have been afraid my OCs aren't good enough to be loved by others. I guess I second-guess myself a lot. Still, I'm so glad you like Seth. It gives me the energy to keep going.

Aw, thank you! Yeah, I'm definitely going to post more work here. It's a slow process since it's nothing but new and current stuff, whereas my other DA account has a lot more. Also, I'm doing digital work, something I'm still experiementing with. I've just discovered my recent coloring method, in fact. The first time I've done it like this was "Trick or Treat." I can really see some improvement when I compare it to my recent Birth of Space image.

Haha, yeah, tits and fanart. So true. I was hoping my latest Birth of Space image would garner some attention. Alas, it got drained out very quickly. Oh well, maybe next time.

and hell, your characters are so good enough. They are actually -original-, which is something lots of people (including myself) struggle with when designing characters. Keep creating, please, you're extremely talented C:

No problem (: And yeah, I know what you mean. Digital work is really interesting. Power to the mousepad, baby! Sorry for taking awhile to reply back, btw. I'm working on the next one already (these pics take FOREVER to finish so I need to start the new pic right after class). *sigh* I've been sleeping at 3 in the morning because school work and this, lol
