Description
A project for sculpture class made of stone (river rock), wood (cherry), metal (steel), and living moss (rock cap moss, presumably). This was my first experience with all of these materials, and I've decided that I love all of them and want to do another sculpture with all these materials again sometime. My favorite part about this sculpture is that when I water the moss, it makes the whole room smell like forest.

"Foundation" popped into my head when I saw it.
Although now that I look at it, it's like a house turned upside down. The foundation stone at the top, the wood walls in the middle, and the metal roofing on the bottom.
Whatever you call it, or don't, it is a lovely piece that inspires thought and conversation. One of the defining aspects of what we call Art.

: D GLAD TO SEE A SCULPTURE !!!! I knew there had to be sccuplturs on here other than me. (Not that I'm much of one)
but yeah, your stuff is loverly, I'm favoriting this one because I am a fan of sculpture that is simple and interesting at the same time. i do alot of metals work, I realize that making box's with metal, can be a real bastard. GRATZ. Nice visual for exploring balence. It looks fairly well centered, but I was wondering if you weighted the base to make it more stable. I consider myself somewhat of a purist, so I probably would have tried to make it stable sanz a balast of some kind, but it is fairly narrow for its height, So I would certainly understand.
also... I had a stint working with various woods, cherry is nice to work with. Lovely scent, pretty too.
Good work, and your Figures and busts are pretty great too.

*finally measures it* About 18-20 inches tall.
Yeah, it's fun. I bet you'd make some awesome stuff if you did have access to said machines... I would like to see it.

I had a lovely big ugly mossbrick that I brought home with me once but I let it dry up. A room full of woods would be worth trying a little harder, if I'm lucky enough to find something like that again. I'm so good at killing plants.

Brought home from where?
Moss is an air plant, so it's really easy to keep. Just keep it out of direct sunlight and maybe mist/pour water on it once in a while, and it seems pretty happy. I recently peeled a clump of moss off a rock with the intent of using it for something and then forgot about it in the art room. A week later, it's still there and happy as can be, it seems.
(I have a north-facing room, so it makes me happy that moss is the one plant that won't die in here. x_x)

Just out of a park. There was a single brick half embedded next to a tree and I said to myself, 'Hey, I want that!' I'm hesitant to feel moss off of anything with my black thumbs, but I'll try the misting once I get a good clump again.

that's really cool~ not too often do you really see a lot of mixed media sculpture with vast media like that stuck together. it's kind of like an "elemental powers combined" type of deal

Awesome! I've been waiting to see this. You've done a damn good job of describing it to me, since this is exactly how I imagined it! (though I didnt expect the steel to be so smooth and polished! How'd you acomplish that?)
^_^ I wanna know everything about how ya did this. I'll sit on ya 'til ya spill it!

Uh, well, I started with a big, round rock and chiseled it with various things until it was brick-shaped. Then I cut a piece of wood out of a log, carved a hole for the rock to sit in, and sanded it. Then I cut a bunch of pieces of steel out of one gigantic steel sheet with a plasma cutter, welded all the pieces into the shape of a box, and then made it all smooth with a grinder. Then I stuck them all together with epoxy, stuck it to a semispherical base, and then glued moss all over it. Not much to it. :3

Ha ha, Lah with a plasma cutter?
^__^ Gad, I love the stone.
Hmmn, out of curiosity, did you happen to see if the plasma cutter did anything to the stone? Man, I'm curious, now... Mm, melty goodness!

No. o_o something tells me that trying to cut a rock with a plasma cutter might be a very bad idea. It cuts through 1/4" steel like it's air... if I were doing anything with a rock, I'd want it to be a very thin rock and I'd want to be wearing inch-thick, heat-resistant body amor, thanks.

Hehehe, wow.
Who knew your school would have such high-power and devistating tools.
...>_> I think I want a plasma cutter. *-very- wicked grin*

From the center angle, you can almost see a person's face, torso and upper arms in the steel. Not sure if you intended that or not, but it's kind of surreal. Forest smells are nice. You should visit the redwoods someday!
