Description This here is one of those examples of things in 2008 I should have finished, but life, money and time got in the way. Page 2 in a 3 page Robin sample I was putting together for DC.

Also, this is when I really started to enjoy doing backgrounds and trying to make them as exciting as the main characters on the page.

Well, I don't know if I'll ever finish this sequence of pages, but at least you guys get to see some of the stuff I'm holding here in my office.

You've got a very "Robin" style, man. I think you could've done wonders with a youth-oriented book.

looks great, man. i'm wondering how you figured out the perspective on this. i can see all the guide lines, but how'd you get them to be so dead on with the vanishing points off the page?

RAHeight2002-2012 In reply to Pok82 [2009-01-16 16:44:53 +0000 UTC]

I do REALLY tight layouts on 8.5X11 paper then blow it up to 11X17.

oh that's genius! why didn't i think of doing that? i do the layouts small, but i never thought of fixing all the vanishing points at a smaller size.

If I could do backgrounds this well, I'd probably enjoy them too...then again I would never get to that point if I don't try...

Anyway, great looking page. Shame it was unfinished, but it's a blessing in disguise because it shows your creative process in a way, which is equally, if not more, useful and inspirational than seeing the completion.

/sigh...

I hate to rub salt in the wounds, but not seeing more of you in pages is one of my great disappointments of 2009.

Your grasp of vanishing point and dramatic shots is something the industry will sorely miss

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

RAHeight2002-2012 In reply to AenTheArtist [2009-01-15 17:52:32 +0000 UTC]

yeah...that's a lot of salt, amigo...LOL. Nah, like I said before....I'm not COMPLETELY gone from the scene. I just won't be taking on 10 different projects because I'm too nice to say 'no' and only completing 2. Or, bugging the crap out of Marvel and DC until they hate me and refuse to give me work. Both paths I've tried and neither one has ended well.

A couple of small Indy projects here and there while working on my own book is just the right amount of work to still be seen, but not stress out.

How long does something like this take you to do? And considering you've pencilled many, many more pages, have you ever struggled with just sitting there- when a page is just stubborn enough not to materialise how you want it to?

Just a question, since I noticed you filling in blacks on the last two panels, before adding line weights and stuff. Or maybe you do that first and the scan isn't so clear...

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

RAHeight2002-2012 In reply to geezone [2009-01-15 16:59:51 +0000 UTC]

YES!!! I struggle with pages all the time! Especially if they are not planned well. If there is anything that I have learned so far doing pages...It's to PLAN every part of the page! Now, don't go crazy and over plan the page and get mired in minutia, but really THINK about what your going to draw. Visualize it first in your mind and then translate that into a thumbnail sketch. It may take a few tries to get it right, but when you do....The process is SO much smoother.

I try to do all my sequential work in 3 steps (which may seem long, but really isn't if you know how to plan).

First, I thumbnail the page after interpreting the script. I usually thumbnail in 5-page increments if there are more than 8 pages.

Second, I translate my thumbnails into tight layouts on 8.5X11 copy paper. This process is where you build your foundations like perspective (which is easier to lock in when the page is smaller and vanishing points are off the page)and composition.

Last, I scan in my tight layouts into Photoshop and blow them up to 11X17 so that I can print them out at 11X17 to lightbox. Once there, I put all the bells and whistles on during my finishes.

That's about it!!

OH! To answer you about spotting blacks before dropping in my line weights and general outline....I tend to cycle the page while working. It keeps me from getting bored or stale from panel to panel. Although, sometimes I get the urge to do one panel at a time on some pages. Mostly the action ones.

Thanks, Pat!! This was fun to do for sure, but I'm thinking that I can get my mojo back in 2009 so that I can bring the heat like I was trying to do on this page.

How have you been feeling lately, BTW?
