(I actually think I did apply the "genetics are weird" idea to her design, since it's canon that parents of one race may not get children of the same race unless they're, like, super purebred or something, as evidenced by the cakes. And regular genetics. )

If you think back to the same episode, Baby Cakes they also tried to explain it by noting a certain instance where that type of pony became part of the family lineage and that is what I was really asking. On that note, I wonder how purebred the mane six are.

No idea. I really have no headcanons on the lineages (other than Gen 1/2 ponies being parents/grandparents to the Mane 6 if they don't appear already in the show like Moondancer), so it's kind of up in the air how pure the lineages are.

Well, I personally like to think that Rarity is the least pure (her father is an Earth Pony,) Pinkie Pie is the second least pure(her grandmother is a Pegasus,) and the rest are them being pretty pure other then a possibly far in the past ancestor of a different race. Back to Flash Forward, who do you think her grandparents are? Maybe they could explain her Pegasus-itude.

*sweats nervously* I have no idea, I've never looked that far into it. And honestly, I'm young enough that I only remember the Gen 3 My Little Pony stuff; I know absolutely nothing about Gens 1 and 2.

I have no thoughts on things, at least when it comes to the more in-the-background characters. I can tell you all about what I ship, or some of the headcanoned parents/grandparents of the Mane 6, but I save all the really deep headcanons for the analysts and such and just pick and choose my personal headcanons from them.

Okay! So, at first I shipped Twilight and Flash because she's gotten no interaction with anyone really that I would consider relationship material and Pony!Flash seemed all right. (Human!Flash seems pretty lame and so not worth it, but Pony!Flash is pretty unknown so he could be a good guy.) I shipped that but not with any real "passion" but it was cute and I liked it. Then season 5 came along and shredded my whole headcanon biz with the return of the "original" friends and the introduction of Moondancer. I tried my very hardest not to ship Twi and Moondancer, but in the end I found that I really really like the pairing and how cute it could be, so I joined the ranks of Twidancer shippers. But I still shipped Flashlight, and couldn't figure out how to reconcile that division of ships. I have other fandoms where I've just resigned myself to shipping two different ships with the same character, but Mlp is different because I actually have a Next Gen for it (that I don't use a whole lot but whatever), and I couldn't figure out which of my ships to make official in my Next Gen. Then it hit me-why not combine the two? So, long story short I did; I created a backstory where Flash is assigned as a personal guard to Twilight a little later on from the series, and they grow close and tentatively start to develop a relationship. But shortly after they start getting serious as a couple, Twilight spends some time in Canterlot for some kind of official business and decides to check up on Moondancer, who she's kept ties with over the few years they've been apart. The meet for an evening of intellectual discussion and just to generally hang out with the use of some fermented cider, when low and behold some feelings are revealed and a kiss is shared. Just a kiss, though, because Twilight cares very deeply about Flash, but she still kisses Moondancer because she's found that she has feelings for the mare as well. (I kinda headcanon Twi as a demisexual/Demiromantic Pansexual/Panromantic mare, where she can fall in love with anypony but it takes a while to get there.) The mares decide to talk it over in the morning when they have clear heads, and when they do talk the next morning Moondancer poses the idea that maybe, with Flash's permission of course, all three of them could be together. (I also headcanon that Equestria's pretty accepting of ponies in general, the only exceptions being those who are violent/actually evil/etc.) Twilight and Moondancer board the first train back to Ponyville and discuss this idea at length with Flash. At first he's very unsure/leaning towards a "no" answer, but given time to think and ponder the decision, he finds that honestly, he has found that he wants Twilight to be happy, and if that means sharing her a bit with Moondancer (who's admittedly attractive to him, though not as much as Twilight), he's.... strangely ok with that. So he tells the mares and together they decide to become a poly-amorous relationship. (Eventually, around the time they decide to have children a few more years down the road, Flash is fairly comfortable with the idea that Twilight is with Moondancer as well as him, and has become pretty affectionate with Moonie too.)

Phew. That took so much longer than expected; maybe I should have just linked their backstory from the Next Gen bios picture I made. Oh well.

All of this is very interesting. I think that is the greatest way to resolve differing ship preferences. I just ship the kids of two ships I think would be more enjoyable or canon.  I would recommend that you put your more in-depth explanation on the initial picture. How about LunaPip?

Oh yes, LunaPip. I don't have a WHOLE lot of headcanons for this ship, mostly I just figure that if they were to get together it would be much later in Pip's life; more than likely he'd have held a small crush on the Princess of the Night for most of his years but nothing huge, and he'd be an adventurer and love traveling at night and stuff and maybe eventually he meets Luna again and they have a meet-cute and it's all adorable and stuff. That's about the extent of it right now, maybe when I finally get around to finishing all my Next Gen universes I'll have more of a headcanon for them (because they're one of my Universe D ships, otherwise known as the Guilty Pleasure!Verse).
