If it was my opinion. I would've changed maria into a hedgehog. No Offense, but it sorta looks wrong.

As for Shadow, well, if there's Amy and Shadow's plushie there... You can think that Shadow is with Amy. That's why, to avenge himself, Sonic get along with Maria xDD.
