This is a contest entry for #Mental-IllnessClub ! I was inspired to draw this piece because of the theme they had presented, 'Pick Hope', and the overall notion to 'Keep Hope Alive.'

At first, I was going to tell a personal story regarding a very close family member, to share the experiences that led me to draw this piece. (though he did not have a mental illness) But then I decided against it, since I feel that I am not ready to tell it to others, and I doubt I will ever be. xD

In here, the girl is playing guitar and singing to the flower. And the iris flower can also mean faith and hope.

Are people not like the flowers you take care of in your backyard? Cliche, but still. Many wither easily if they cannot obtain what they need, and yet many flourish and blossom with the proper care. I remember when I would watch my mom patiently prune her rose bushes and fertilize the soil for the growing lemon tree. I would also sing to the plants in hopes of helping them grow.
And when I think of hope, I think back to those times. People who are faced with misfortune often easily fall into despair. They often sink into misery, into depression. Only they themselves are capable of deciding how they view their lives and how they live. Will they sink into misery, or cling onto hope? That is their decision. And yet what can we do to help them besides being there for them? The world is how it is, but everyone's worlds are different. They view the world through different eyes, their views of the world filtered through their experiences and interpreted in different ways. By showing them love and care, we hope to brighten the worlds of those whose visions are obscured by black clouds of uncertainty and despair. We sing to them to express our love, and hope the flowers will live and flourish under our nurturing.
And like ~rockabells mentioned in her poster, "Darkness does not exist. It is only the lack of light." We all need light in our lives, and so do others. Appreciate the love you are given, and in turn, show your love to others (:

Sorry for rambling ; O; I'm only a high school student, so there's only so much I have experienced haha. But these are my current views on this topic. If we were to become depressed, would we also not seek the reassurance of our friends and family?

It's so hard to express what I mean through words. I didn't know how to address this except through "we" and "they." ; O;
I hope this made sense, if anyone bothered to read it xD
