Description
In Vrindavan, India, the term gopi refers to cowherd women - namely, women who care for cows or are the wives of cowherd men. People don't kill or eat cows in India, so there are a lot of cowherd men and women around. In the volumes of the Indian epic the Srimad-Bhagavatam, it describes how the young gopis of Vrindavan would leave their houses during the night to go see the love of their life, Vrindavan's prince, named Shyam. Shyam was a very charming young man who was expert at playing the flute. The scene I drew here is a sort of remake of a similar scene painted by a woman named Jadurani; it depicts gopis (in the case of my drawing, one gopi) rushing to go see Shyam.
I am HORRIBLE at backgrounds, so please ignore my background. I had to put it in because I didn't want this gopi floating in empty space. I made it vague because I haven't had enough practice drawing realistic backgrounds in detail.
I'm proud of how the gopi came out. I looked at the pose of a gopi in Jadurani's painting for reference. I especially like how the folds of her skirt and the shawl wrapped around her torso and flying in the wind came out, because I have trouble with cloth folds. She is dressed in the traditional sari (a piece of cloth wrapped in skirtform around the woman's waist and then flung around the torso over one shoulder) of a gopi with her hair braided (I am so surprised that I was able to draw her braid realistically - braids are hard to draw).
Comments welcome (please ignore the background)!

ha, inspiring? I don't like it much myself, but thank you. I would like to redo this one, or draw one like it, and use lots of reference to make it more realistic.
I would love to see your gopis!
And thanks for the encouragement on adding color. Once I take my painting class next semester, perhaps I'll be more daring...
