process: rainoff.deviantart.com/art/Fri…Have some Undertale fanart. I haven't played it myself, but I marathoned Barry and Ross playing it on Steam Train and actually cried at the one or other part (and laughed so hard at the Papyrus moments).
I've wanted to draw something Undertale-related for a while and I thought I'd end with Toriel or the skeletons, but then ended up with Frisk.

Yeah, like I said before I don't jump onto every trend either. But if whatever is hyped is to my liking I won't reject it. And in the end I wouldn't have found out about it if it hadn't been for all the fanart.
Undertale has a wonderful concept and you can tell the makers put thought and emotion into it. 5 nights at Freddy's also was huge, but that never interested me since it didn't have anyone to emotionally connect with. I mean, I still enjoyed seeing nicely done fanart with people's interpretations of the characters plus people's theories of what was behind this and that, but the game itself I didn't care about.

Eh, it always bugs me when fans choose to change existing characters to suit them better, particularly when I don't like/car about the characters. As far as I'm concerned the FNAF cast have no personalities, they are remorseless killer zombie robots and that's all they'll ever be, giving them personalities just means changing them into your own characters, and if you're doing that then you're stealing them and altering them, which as far as I'm concerned is like making recolour characters only worse, and they get a free pass for that kind of stuff. (Personally I feel the negativity toward people who make recolours is totally unjustified) IMO if you don't like the characters as they are, you shouldn't like them period, but then that is only my personal opinion. That and the way that Sonic fans portray Shadow honestly makes me sick.

With characters who have no personality it doesn't bug me when fans make up their own characteristics for them. There's no emotional attachment, so fans giving them their own twist doesn't ruin anything for me.
What bugs me is when people take characters whose personality are already defined and they completely disregard the existing material - in other words they just take the name and/or design and have them doing whatever they want. I think fanfics do that more often than drawings though. If people change almost everything why not create an own character from scratch?
Not a big fan of re-colors either. Although it's less that it annoys me and much more that I don't see the point in it. No matter how much you change the color scheme, it will always look and feel too much like the original to ever become your character. References are fine, adapting styles is fine, but taking an existing image and changing it around simply can't be satisfying. (unless it's a screenshot edit for humorous reasons, that can be very enjoyable)

I understand, for me it just bugs me because it feels like they're lying to themselves. But anyway, each to their own.
By recolours I don't mean recoloured screenshots and the like, I mean pictures drawn of characters that are recolours of other characters. Many times these are made by people who don't know any better, or lack our gift of creativity. They just want to be part of what we are here on dA, and it upsets me to see them being shot down by high and mighty "People who can't come up with new and original ideas are worthless" artists with nothing better to do than send mean and rude messages to people who often don't deserve it.

Oh, yeah that's a different matter. I've seen downright altered screenshot and even other artists' pictures being altered without permission. If they are drawn from scratch, then there's something personal in it and even if it's not the most creative route to take in the end it's still drawing practice.
I still think re-colors can't fully feel like your own babies because they will always strongly remind you of someone else's character, but that shouldn't be other people's business. Insulting people because of that is just plain rude, if anything one should encourage them to create their own character instead of discouraging them to draw altogether. We all have to start somewhere. Okay, if people clearly drew a re-color but deny any connection to the original, that is eye-roll-worthy, but like I said, practice is practice and once they're confident enough I believe they'll naturally want to draw their own stuff.

Yeah my feelings exactly, I mean for me even those who want to distance their characters from their respective inspirations despite their characters obviously being inspired by them deserve a chance. I mean I face that issue myself with my own character Xela, he may look like Tails but lives in a totally different universe to the Sonic cast, I want to change his design but unfortunately I've grown too fond of his current design to change it, that and he has too many fans who also like his current design, so its a bit of a dilemma for me, particularly considering I intend to make my own game series for him. Takashi Iizuka told me I can use his design as it is though, so I dunno...

Uh-huh. And you shouldn't forget that there's a difference between inspired and copied. We all draw inspiration from the things around us and that flaws into our art consciously or subconsciously.
Yes, that's what I mean, he will clearly remind people of Tails, but he doesn't look like a 1:1 copy and the fact that you gave him his own personality, story etc. allows people to tell them apart even better. Not to mention Tails isn't the only several-tailed fox character in existence.
Ow, yeah I see how that would be an issue. People would call it a design rip-off since you can still see the Tails influence. And I know changing a design you've grown fond of feels like hurting your babies.

Yeah, I consider my characters' world inspired by Sonic Adventure owing to similar themes of buddism (with the concept of peace and chaos) and that's really about it, the rest is a mish mash of ideas including some of my own thrown in.
Yeah, that's why I've considered asking friends to play with his design to see if they can come up with a design just as appealing but more original, I don't think I can, it's just hard for me.

Hmm, yes I can see why. If it's changed to much from how you know and love him, it will constantly bother you.
Although not changing his main design but simply having it drawn in a different drawing style might help. I think the main issue will remain the 2 tails.

I think maybe a few tiny changes will already be enough differentiation. Such as the number of tails - I think I've even already seen him with 3 instead of 2 tails in your gallery. I mean, the fur color, eye color and way of dressing are already different from Tails' so unless Xela uses his tails to helicopter around, he should be fine design-wise, right?

Yeah I guess that's the obvious decision, and no Xela doesn't fly, he does have the ability to hover using his Kitsune powers though. He was at one point going to be able to swim by using them as a boat propellor, but then Game Freak went and used that idea (after I came up with it) for Buizel and Floatsel, and I figured it didn't really make sense biologically, so I dumped the idea.

Yeah, I hate when that happens. You have something for your characters in mind since forever and suddenly a popular game/movie/series does it and you're like O___O "Great, now it'll look like I stole it".
I also have that issue with names. I always try to give my characters names that no well-known character has. Such as I've had Cadence for about 10 years now and then there suddenly was a character named Cadence in MLP so now it's kinda weird.

I can't say its that big of a coincidence with names, particularly names which are nouns in the English language, I haven't had many of my character's names crop up in games, with some exceptions such as Aqua in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, and Atsushi being the name of one of the team that made Sonic Adventure (I was very surprised when I saw that!)
But yeah, I think the worst case for me is still the Binaria, when I came up with those guys I thought I was onto something really awesome, the idea of a race of virtual creatures that exist in a man-made world despite not being made by humans, and being capable of non-logical thought, and literally as soon as I've finalized a design for them I find out that the exact same idea had been used for the ISOs in the movie TRON Legacy, that was very frustrating for me >_<; I still love my little virtual teddies though ^^
