Description
Just going back through some old work and updating. You may recognize these designs from my 2011 JLA piece... I've been trying to update each character with an improved, hand drawn version and eventually I will add them all in together to replace the original but in some rare cases like with the canary here, the digitally drawn version will remain as is simply because I feel like it was already adequate.

The basics here for the designs came from the idea of each personality.

CANARY

I always liked the idea of Canary being bold enough to wear the fishnets but I also felt that her original outfit was a bit dated. The attitude was something that appealed to me as rebellious and sort of rockstar-esque... The idea that her superpower was actually her voice and that she rides around on a motorcycle was just really fun. So I directly modeled my version of her after P!nk.

I kept the skimpy outfit and I updated the leather jacket with a more form fitting leather bustier. Even though Canary is a master at hand to hand combat, she really wouldn't wear a whole lot of protection simply because her power acts almost like a shield for her. She doesn't have to get in close or worry about a lot of damage from projectiles because as soon as something heads her way, literally all she has to do is turn her head and cry out. Her voice can stop a hailstorm of bullets... So she has this degree of confidence to her and she outwardly projects that. Her outfit should throw people off guard. She owns her body and she takes advantage of that.

I added the knee and elbow pads because despite all of her advantages , that was one thing that still seemed practical.

When it came to a disguise I know that she traditionally doesn't wear a mask so I just extended that fishnet motif upward and gave her something unique. I cropped her hair short because I like the idea that in her day job she could easily wear a brunette wig (probably with bangs) and dress down in a way that changes her appearance in a simple but drastic manner. I mean once she takes out the nose ring and does those 2 things, it would actually make a huge difference in how recognizable she was.

Small accessories like the knife and the boots just seemed fitting with the general idea and mood I aimed to convey...

ARROW

Ok, so at the time of my original design, this was a top to bottom reboot. the hood which has since become popular in practically every version of the character was still a touch and go thing in the comics and had basically proven most successful on Smallville.

I wanted Ollie to come across literally as a modern robin hood. I looked at the bracers and the type of arm guards that archers actually wear, but I made a lot of choices based on what it would really take to project that original idea. I wanted leather... but I decided it should be brown, not black and it shouldn't be everywhere, just accents of it. I wanted brass accents too but not in an overpowering way. So I gave him some spats, and some piped trim around the clothing and I gave him brown leather accessories. Most of the fabric on his uniform is just that though... its fabric. Heavy canvas type fabric, but fabric nonetheless. Ollie isn't shiny when he moves around. As "biker fetish" as Canary is, Ollie is NOT. He's very subdued. He's a hunter. He moves, fights and thinks like a hunter... why? Well because that's where he gained his skill... HUNTING ON AN ISLAND! Surviving, disappearing into the background and striking wit precision.

I decided that he shouldn't have sleeves because they would snag too easily on the bow string in a fast paced scramble and I opted to add extra padding to areas like the chest and the knees for when he has to go hand to hand. his chest armor is essentially a vest with ribbing at the sides for flexibility. The shoulder pads seemed appropriate because of his fighting style and I gave him an extra quiver for crossbow bolts on his thigh. The belt buckle was a no brainer but felt like it added to the superhero idea. I decided that his knee pads would be built into his pants because as a hunter, and particularly as a bow hunter, that's the way those things are usually made.

Also in lieu of a mask... I figured that the guy is sort of rich and he can afford some tech, so I gave him a custom state of the art, night vision, heads up display visor complete with target tracking. I like the idea that these heroes who can afford tech actually utilize it. I mean if Ollie is out there at night most of the time then he would benefit from having something like this. It covers just as much as a domino mask but it serves a wider purpose and that's always something that I enjoy including.

The face is actually based on the actor Josh Holloway because I feel that he could totally nail the part of a slightly older Oliver Queen than any incarnation we have seen on screen so far and he has the type f charisma that someone would expect from the character.

Now... here is the update part.

My design changes since 2011 include choosing to strap the bow to his back and put the crossbow in his hand rather than holstered. I added a strap for his bow and quiver that extends over his chest. This has some utility pouches in addition to the one on his belt... I changed the laces on his spats to rivets and I converted his pants to cammo...(Because if any superhero gets to wear cammo and still feel like it belongs, then it is definitely green arrow... actually it sort of makes sense.) Basically it is still very much the same design as before. I just wanted to redraw it so that I was happier with the result.
