Description it is finally done *^*
this one took so long!!! i kind of stalled in the middle and was just stuck there for a few days, but overall this was really fun to make. i went back to my roots this time by greyscaling the horse to paint most of the details/fix the lighting, and then i recolorized the horse back to bay! i wanted to make a druid/wood nymph type horse; with a magical forest guardian vibe, but i wanted to keep things rather natural.

as always, feedback is loved! thank you for viewing!

okay!! I will try to remember to do more of them, and let you know when I do!
i streamed like... twice for this but kept forgetting to start one every time I sat down to work it also doesn't help that I work in spurts lol, I'll doodle details for 15-20 minutes, and then watch half an episode of something; or waste time on youtube; or crawl around on here; or scroll through social media >w< I'll put in a lot of total hours on an image but it will be spread out stupidly over a couple of weeks in 30 minute stretches, I need to be more focused for sure!! Maybe streaming more would help me finish things in a timely manner.... hmmm..... ;D

I think I might start streaming as well- because it does seem to help force you to you sit down and power through a piece.

I just love your style so much! How do you get the horse to look so soft and painterly and yet crisp at the same time? Detailing work on point tbh.

I haven't done detailing like this in quite a long time, so thank you for giving it some love!
I really do paint over the whole entire horse, and especially when I really want that painterly look, that's just the best way to do it! I could do another walk through showing how it's done maybe? I keep trying to explain it here and then it comes out all hard to follow because I am bad at describing these sorts of things! :')

After I smudge my horse's base layer, I turn it grey and then start using shades of grey/black/white not just to paint the details that I want to enhance, but also to smooth over the coat and add new details. Like with this stock, the horse's face and the majority of the chest and neck were in shadow, and needed to be totally repainted. The legs too, especially the one that is partially hidden by rock, are entirely repainted too. The light was all off so I just painted over them. And the hoof that is on the ground is 100% a painted object, most of the original hoof was hidden by debris so I just erased it and drew on a new one, and then kept adding details until it matched the other two hooves.

Once I'm all done with any image, I merge all my layers together and play with the overall settings of the completed picture. Especially using the 'add noise filter' followed by sharping the image (be very careful with this, a little goes a long way!!), it helps bring out the overall details really crisply, and blends all the elements in together if you look at normal photographs, they are quite sharp, which is why it is often recommended to smudge your subject a little before you start painting, to get rid of all that grain! So once your image is finished, but before resizing, it really makes it look wonderful (in my opinion) to add a bit of that grain back in, just like a real capture would have!

Ahhhhh thanks so much for the detailed insight into your process! The neck and face look super, and I LOVE the painted hoof (idk it looks so well-shaped and cute???) Definitely agree about the noise pulling it all together. I'm not sure I have the patience for such hardcore repainting, but I'll have to give it a try sometime!

no problem!! and thank you again haha I definitely channel a lot of my anxiety/hyper fixation issues into my art hahaha; it is much nicer to get fixated and frustrated over making pretty details come together than it is to fixate on things in my life i shouldn't be over thinking or stressing out over to begin with! i started with adding small details and just found that i really liked the challenge of it and found it really soothing/cathartic, so I started getting more and more detailed. I want to start getting better with backgrounds now too, I want to make sure I'm putting as much love into the overall image as I do into the look of the horse!
